Poppage - Wasn't worth the wait - UPDATE! Joe called back

First 5 cards belong to another forum user.

I tried to get in contact with Joe but I guess I called too late to get him on a Friday. I want to know if the grader that graded the 1981 Kelloggs cards knew what they were looking for. The cards subbed were from clean factory sealed sets and are pristine.

The 1981 Topps were the best of the best of a few stars and commons with low or zero pop PSA 10's and came from 2 clean cut card cases.

I think what this sub proves to me a s a player collector is this...And by the way, thanks for subbing that 87 Fisk Bill...

If you collect a player that started his career after 1970, your best best for getting a high grade set is this

    1) Patience - be prepared to be patient

    2) Find one raw card example that you think is a 10 - especially if it's low pop

    3) sub that card

    4) when it comes back a 9...add it to your set

    5) wait two years until a bunch of 10's come around

    6) dump your 9 for $3 and buy a 10 for $12-$15.

Yes, you're patient, but you're only ending up spending $20 in the ultimate 10 you get...plus you can add placeholder cards to your set until some other idiot subs 20 1987 Donruss Carlton Fisk's in hopes of getting through that glass ceiling.

The SP rookie edition foil cards are hard to find in decent condition and every UD Starquest I've pulled from a pack has been closer to a 7 or 8 than a 10.

The top five cards are mine. A few thoughts:
    1) pulled from a pack from BBCE sometime last year. was hoping for a 9 but I'm not surprised
    2) also pulled from a BBCE pack. I'm not sure how this didn't come back as at least a 9
    3) bought raw on ebay. a nice upgrade for my 8. a very tough card
    4) I needed this card for my Gwynn basic set. I knew it wouldn't grade that high but was hoping the grader might be blind.
    5) another Gwynn for my set. pulled from a pack back on '01. now a pop 1 none higher

i KNEW you would get screwed on the 81's. esp. the Reggies. sigh.

I'm actually pretty happy with everything below the 1981 Topps. The 83 Ripken is sweet especially for $2 plus grading fees. The 2007 SP Rookie Edition are very condition sensitive and subject to flaking and scratches. I think I will take 10's on all the ones I subbed.

I hope everybody is buying up PSA 10 1981 Topps on ebay, because if you follow the pops on this board you know how tough they really are.

Wish those would've turned out better for you.

Regarding 81's, Mike is right. I'm not much into post 80 stuff but I have a ton of 81's laying around here and just from looking at them I can tell that 10's are few and far between.

Joe called me back and said he would review the Kelloggs cards free of charge. I am thinking the grader that had them did not fully understand how to grade 3-D cards that are perforated.

Why are you complaining? It looks like you got the bone on all three of those Garveys.

Guy, I believe you and I discussed those 81 Kelloggs cards a while back. Those are the ones that really PO'd me. I can accept the 81 Topps since they are apperantly held to higher standards than other 1980's Topps cards.

I think this is a miscommunication. Up here in the Great White North the phrase 'got the bone' means something along the lines of.. well... hey, remember that sweet movie Deliverance?

you definitely had a nice run of garveys on your case. i don't think any of mine would have yielded above an 8. i've still not sent in many more of mine from the cut case. these look gem under a loupe. not really sure what they're looking for on these. getting one 10 out of 30+ other cards is absurd.

    Thanks,

    David (LD_Ferg)
