What's the biggest drop in value of a card that you can remember?

I am sure that there are some worse than this, but I remember the 1986 Donruss Jose Canseco selling for over $100. Now, they can be had for a dollar.

What are some more that was way up there in price, now are next to worthless?

I remember the 1984 Donruss Strawberry selling and I do mean actually being sold for $150.00 to 175.00 at a show in New York. Now its a common. Well at least as far as I am concerned. its a common.

Wow! I did not know that. I knew that they were double figures for a long time, but I didn't realize that it sold for over $100.

How much was the Brien Taylor 1992 Topps Gold autograph selling for, when it came out? I thought that was a $300 - $400 card at the time.

i remember dealers tagging the Canseco at well over $200...... same with the 84D Mattingly. also, the 84FU Clemens, Puckett were around $500, 350 respectively.... any number of 'error' cards- 82F Littlefield, 89F B. Ripken, 89UD Dale Murphy, etc... as well as any star rookie or prospect that didn't pan out or make the hall- Strawberry, will clark, bo jackson, gregg jeffries, gooden, um, er, mcgwire...... the 86D/F Cecil Fielder was going for $40-50 too!!! the 88Score Traded Alomar was around $70 at one time. the 88TT Ventura was around $25

just for the halibut, did OJ's cards drop?? or did he attain legend status beyond superstar athlete??

If you are want to talk about percentage drop instead of straight dollar drop, the 89 Fleer Ripken FF has to be at or very close to the top. It was selling in the $250 range at the peak of the hype. Now they can be had raw on eBay for less than $5.

My condo in Florida.

$220K in 2005, and now, sellers are asking $59K with no buyers for similar units in my community! A real Bummer!

Yep, that real estate bubble & now a recession, brought down the value of many things, including sports cards! (IMO, steroid scandals also hurt sports card values recently...)

And if it gets worse (closer to a depression)? Who know's how low cards prices can go?

P.S. We all would hate to see collections sold, just to put food on the table or to pay the heating bill (or air conditioning bill here in South Florida! Yikes!)

not a specific card, but i do recall the O-pee-chee Premier Hockey (1991?) selling for well in excess of 5 grand a case after release and then sinking like a leaky, abandoned submarine.

at its peak, a buddy of mine sold a 91OPC Premier case for $15K. that Fedorov was $250 and beyond!!! the Jagr and Roenick were $50-80 too!

Seems to me an '89 UD Jerome Walton card was a piece of gold for a short while.... now it's just a 'piece'

My entire Chris Sabo collection! .... but still priceless to me! : )

'85 Topps Mark McGwire... still a card of value, but waaay down from where it's been.
I also CLEARLY remember paying $30 for an '87 Fleer Will Clark back in the day, and was HAPPY! I found one at that price!

Today... that same 'thrill' Rc sits in my $.50 box at shows... poor guy.

Percentagewise, the '84 Ron Kittle card has to be up there. I remember that card causing quite a stir when it was quickly selling for over $5! What's it worth now, half a penny or so?

Doug -- that Mint 9 Bonds sold for $90-$100 for quite a while -- the 10s sold for close to $500

The 9s are now "all you can eat" for the price of inflated postage.

Just looked up one of my old Bonds submissions - Jan 2005 -- fortunately I paid very little and sold most for decent prices -- (unfortunately) I still have the two 10s

It also reminded me of the Bonds bias in grading - his % of 9s and 10s were about 1/2 the rest of the sets.

High prices are always relative to a lot of factors, mainly the region of the country. For example, in that same 89 UD Hi numbers set, the Nolan Ryan football card was just as hot and sold for almost as much as Walton, Abbott or Griffey in the Houston area.

Not a card. But I'm sure you recall that Todd McFarlane purchased McGwire's 70th homerun ball for $3 million. How much is that ball worth now? I would be surprised if it even fetched $100,000.00 now.

$5 isn't even close. I just sold an OC but otherwise Minty Fresh Rickey on eBay for about $25 dlvd.

I have one PSA 8.5 and one PSA 9 that you can have for $30 dlvd.

I don't think it was ever anywhere close to that. I don't think it sold for $50. Shaq Classic rookies were huge due to the exclusive deal. Topps could not release a Shaq card until well into the season. The Beam Team shaq was the biggest at the time.

The rookie cards of Jerome Walton, Ron Kittle, Mike Greenwell and other players who NEVER turned out to be stars will obviously NEVER go back up in value -- those cards were purchased on speculation and the players turned out to be a flash in the pan.

However, the rookie cards of guys like Bonds and Clemens WILL bounce back -- maybe not to their peak value, but they will be expensive again. The combination of drug accusations and the terrible economy will keep the prices down for a few years. But when the economy recovers and we turn the page on the steroid era, Bonds and Clemens will once again return to be the "baseball legends" they deserve to be -- the premier players of an era when many, many players were taking performance enhancers.
