Unimpressive!

MesquiteMesquite Posts: 4,075 ✭✭✭
First. This (and three others) arrived at my door about three hours before I returned home today. I got lucky - they were still sitting there when I arrived home.

Second. While the obverse strike is just OK, I think the qualiity of the reverse strike blows. Are there not two baby eagles under the mom's wing? Looks more like one baby under a mom's dislocated wing. And, what's going on with her right wing? The feather detail on the dad's chest? The strike is weak. Not very impressed with the quality.

I can't imagine that the Mint's revenues will grow with this level of commitment to quality and security.

The mint needs to take a time out and start over. They pushed themselves too hard and now quality control is suffering.

I hope the dropping of many products will help things over the next couple of years.

Perhaps not a fair comparison, but all I have is a proof half.

It looks perfectly normal and I see nothing at all wrong with it, except that is one ugly design (reverse).

Aren't those the "bullion" issues? I thought all "collector" issues had the "W" mint mark?

Please correct me if I'm wrong! I get confused by all the Mint changes!

EDITED: NEVERMIND, I guess it was so mushy I missed the "W" image

Tough crowd. For an MS coin priced not too much over spot, the coin looks struck well enough to me. RG's looks a little stronger, but it's hard to tell how much might related to focus. I'd be happy to own either example posted.

I do agree with Dcarr, the design is a bit uninspired.

Here's another comparison, from one ounce down to 10th ounce. (Admittedly I need to take the small one out of the plastic and reshoot, but it gives you the idea.)

I think the 1/4 ouncer is the only "W" mint, but it is possible the ouncer is, three of these pics are old.

Rob, your sequence convinces me that, of the four coins, the quarter oz AGE is poorly struck.

    different coin, same question...

UHR arrived yesterday and it had spots and a scratch and what appears to be die polishing marks {although these appear to be on most or all of them}...

all 20 of my Lincoln Commem Proofs has smooth areas on the reverse where they should be frosty. one had a black spot with a scratch. another had milky spots and another had something struck into it. Three of them had rust-red fibers inside the capsule and on the coins.

    same question...

is something wrong with the mint's quality control?

is this someting a group needs to point out to the mint?

Those are bullion!! You buy them to own Gold. They are not coins. Who looks that closely at these things or cares?

Actually, they are issued as collector coins for a premium, not as bullion. And anyone that collects coins they like ought to look at their coins, care about their coins, and above all enjoy their coins.

I think the difference is telling when comparing to the Proof that Mesquite posted. Coin struck once vs. coin struck twice. One also struck slower and with more pressure. I would expect a mint state coin to have a mushy spot on occasion.

You're just mad because your coin has Dee Snider on the obverse.

When it comes to bullion, the US Mint is not the 'only game in town'.

    Austrailian bullion

Unless the US Mint wants to melt down their returns, they should produce coins that people like.

    Mush? Yeck.

I was thinking sleeping swan with the beak tucked in under the wing feathers.

People actually look at those things? image It never occurred to me.. image

Edit: Okay, I just looked at mine (THE KEY to the ENTIRE US GOLD SERIES), and it looks about the same. image

The reverse looks OK to me - not necessarily impressive, but I see no "obvious" problems.

My question is, what the heck is going on with Miss Liberty's nose?

She's always looked a bit mannish, but this face is just.... well, hopefully she has a good personality!

They must have a cartoonist doing the facial work. I refer back to my previous comments on the latest cartoon-like Lincoln cent.

When it comes to mint issued gold, I try to remember quantity over quality.
When we go long, no matter how weakly or poorly struck, we're in a great position.

Im trying to figure out what the eagle family thinks of dad bringing home a branch of leaves instead of a rabbit or mouse. Of course a rodent on a US mint coin would probably look something like an old shoe with eyes.
