Type 1 proof Franklin halves

JulianJulian Posts: 3,370 ✭✭✭
Has anyone ever heard of a 1957 or 58 Type 1 proof Franklin half dollar?

I have a customer that believes that they exist and of course wants them.

I have never seen or heard of one.

Any help???

No, I've never seen nor heard of a type 1 for any years after 56, but, I'm not a franky expert either. The guy that was hasn't been able to post here for a few years. image

Julian - Never heard of one.

The Type 1 has the same reverse as the 1955, so I'd think in 57/58 the reverses were all used up...but then again you never know.

Talk to Val at the next show....he will know for sure.

I don't even want to think about how many '58 and '59 proof sets I have looked over, not to mention slabs. I have never seen a Type 1 for any proof Franklin other than 1950-56.

Since the mint switched to the type 2 early in 1956, it would make sense that they used up all the Type 1 reverse dies well before the end of the year.

But I suppose it is still possible. But there would probably be thousands of them out there if a Type 1 reverse die was used in '58 or '59.

I think your customer may be cornfusing the Proofs with Mint State. There are Type 1 and Type 2 Uncs. from 56-63. Not sure what the PUP is on the uncs., however it may be the same as for the '56 Proof reverse.

Rick's link, just above should clear things up.

The PUP are the same for the uncs and proofs.
Type 2 uncs exist for 1958 and 1959 only.

Never heard of type 1 proofs for those years. The business strikes would be considered type 1 for these years.

I would think if they existed they would have been discovered in the past 50 years.
