Ebay buyer wants to return graded card bought on ebay. Paging Storm.
I sold an Alex Rodriguez PSA 9 1994 SP RC on ebay to athetictreasures. Here's what he had to say:

First of all, I have sent the graded card in smaller padded envelope w/ a cardboard in it, and then placed it in a bigger bubble envelope. In my 7 years of shipping, I've never had a problem with graded cards getting damaged this way. Personally, I think this guy is showing buyer remorse since he took exactly 7 days to send paypal payment. Also, judging from his past fb, he's been a problem seller and buyer. Now my question is should I ask him to show scans of the damage? And if he wants a refund, should I wait until sends the card back to pay him. I really don't want to be burned based on this sale and I send refund, he may just keep the card. Please advise!

Yup.
It is not possible to defeat a SNAD claim that is based on a "cracked slab,"
or a "damaged in transit" issue.
(SNADs on tpg-items can ONLY be defeated if the buyer clearly and distinctly
tries to claim his grade judgement should override that of the TPG.)
Tell the guy to return the card to you.
Don't tell him to use DC/SC, unless you feel CERTAIN he is a square shooter.
(He will need DC/SC to prove he returned the item.)
When you get the card back, make SURE it is the same card you sold the guy.
If he pulls a switcheroo, his SNAD-claim can be defeated on appeal.

If that is the card/slab, refund the guy and get the card reholdered.
The defect in the slab is noted in the listing, but that will not prevail
in a SNAD claim without TREMENDOUS effort.
Many buyers don't even read what sellers write in the listings.

It really is best not to sell damaged slabs. They will always look
worse to the buyer when he gets them in his hand than they
do in the pics.
I'm not sure that's his card, but if it is .... what you just said is exactly what I was thinking when I first saw the scan.
Plus, the cropping doesn't give a clear enough view of the edges in question.

So, Storm, should I refund the guy ASAP or wait until he sends the card, he can still pull a switcharoo. He hasn't filed a SNAD claim yet.
This is really the first time I had problem with a big dollar item in 3 digits, and that's just a few sales in my 7 year history of selling.

Just send an email that says "return the card and I will issue a refund on receipt."
Look it over closely and make sure there was no switch.
The slab was likely easy to get into, if somebody wanted
to do a switch.

I guess you should ask him to please not leave you a NEG.
He may try to hold you up for return shipping. I guess I would pay it,
if he "promises" not to leave a NEG.

You can ask your mail carrier to watch, if you are friends with him.
The slab could well have gotten worse in its travels.
Perfect packaging usually protects perfect slabs, BUT a cracked
slab can easily get shattered no matter how well it is packed.
I doubt the guy is a scammer. But, I dunno.

I wouldn't refund him on the deal. If the card got damaged in shipment, it's an insurance issue, then I'd work out a USPS insurance claim with the buyer.

There is absolute logical merit in that position.
Sadly, PayPal will force a refund and it is not worth
fighting with them over.

"As Is" sales are fine with PayPal away from EBAY.
But, they are always problematic on EBAY.
