What does "grade limiting" mean exactly. I've not heard the term. Those
do appear to be hits from another coin and yes they would reduce the grade
    appropriately.

without showing the whole coin and being able to determine its general
grade.. the term grade limiting is quite useless.

no of course those hits are not grade limiting for a XF-AU coin. For
a MS67 they may very well be.

    doh! ;-)

While I understand what you are saying I am still only asking about the area that I show. However if you feel you must see the entire coin simply to comment on the marks, here it is.

Now, realize, I am not asking for a grade opinion. I am only asking if the marks would limit the grade (which the probably would but you just never know) and what you think the marks might be?

If those are raised spots, which they appear to be, then they would be due to die erosion or die rust, and as such, should not be grade limiting since they would be mint related-in my humble opinion....

Come on now Lee, YOU are the IKE expert around here! I'd say the spots would probably not impact the grade. But you never know.

They are not raised but you're close!

Actually, I have no idea what they are but there is a reason I am asking.

I think he's referring to 'raised dots' on the die.

If this is as-struck it wouldn't affect the technical grade one iota. Of course, in the real world people don't buy the technical grade.

Put it this way, it should limit if from grading MS70.

Well, when I first noticed this on this Wannabe PegLeg 1977-D, I immediately discounted it as a contact mark from some other coin until I saw the same thing on the second coin I had:

Although the marks are similar, they are not identical and were obviously caused from something which had adhered to the die's surface.

My opinion is that it would limit the grade but since the coin is linited to MS64 for other reasons it would not make that much of a difference.

What I did find intriguing (enough to share) is the fact that these two coins came from the same die and share not only these strange little marks but identical die polishing/abrading marks.

On a side note, that pink background right next to my yellow avatar looks a little Eastery dontcha think? image
