It's a small world after all (hummed to the Disney tune)

This was a little weird, just sold a coin on eBay to a guy that lives less than a block from my old house.....
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.
Recipient of the coveted "You Suck" award, April 2009 for cherrypicking a 1833 CBHD LM-5, and April 2022 for a 1835 LM-12, and again in Aug 2012 for picking off a 1952 FS-902.

I just realized that a member here has a daughter going to the same University I'm attending, and just happens to be in the same program I'm taking.
Unfortunately, I'm two grades below her, so I don't know her, but still coincidental (or should I say "a small world")

I have had several interesting small world encounters over my life but my most interesting one is this:

My wife and I were on vacation on November in Germany a few years ago and went to Nueschwanstein (Ludwigs Castle) in Bavaria. In the group of about 20 people that we went through the castle with was an American family with a fairly active child and the grandmother. The husband in the family was very distinctive with a portly belly, white hair and a walrus mustache. During the course of the tour I took a photo out a window (no flash) and because the tour guide had said earlier not to take photos in a certain room the grandmother felt that I had broken a rule somehow (we were not in that particular room and I was taking a shot from the window). Anyway she proceeded to give me a bit of a dressing down about the photo taking and it was left at that. My wife and I had a good laugh after about how the grandma had flipped out over my photo taking but did absolutely nothing about the grandkid having to be corrected by thoe guide a few times during the tour as well as being loud and obnoxious.

So anyway 2 weeks later we are back in Texas at a restaurant...and who is there but the family. We were in the same tour at the castle then 2 weeks later 5300 miles away in the same restaurant at the same time. They were waiting for a table when we walked in...we got seated right away so did not spend a couple minutes in the same vicinity. I regret not at least saying 'Hi' to them as I am sure they would have been surprised by the coincidence as much as I was but I was sort of amazed at the whole thing and wasn't really sure how they would react 'cause of the photo thing so I did not.

  • My best small world story involves my dad. My entire family went on a cruise for the millennium. This was the year before my senior year in high school, and my father was trying to help me determine what to do with my life. He carefully explained the importance of enjoying what you do and also explained the importance of a college education. He proceeded to explain to me that although college will help you to get a higher paying job, it will not always make you happy. He told me of a story where at his graduation a group of his parents friends had come up to him and wished him well. One particular fellow came and offered my father a job. He explained that he was moving to New Jersey to open a fishing charter and needed a first mate. He would give him a apartment in his basement, feed him, and pay him for the work. My dad explained to me that it was one of the hardest decisions of his life. This, as he thought, was a good story to convey the fact that you don't always have to be rich to be happy. The problem occurred later on that afternoon. It was still sunny out, so I went to visit my parents on the deck, as they took in the sun. As I approached I saw an older man speaking with my father, I was introduced and was astonished to find that this was the very man who offered my dad the job when he was but 18. After a little chat he offered me the exact same deal as my father was offered. My father was right in saying that turning down a lifetime dream is a hard thing to swallow. I regret to inform you that I am but a lowly computer programmer now, but often wonder of the "fish"(or job as it was) that got away.

    My best "small world" story:

I am a regular on VAMWorld. Struck up a conversation with another VAMmer from NY state. Eventually, found out that his father bought my wife's father's family home (from my wife's grandfather).
