1947 C Newfoundland 5 Cents imaged

Ok guys, someone was talking about buying nice examples... I'm not expert grader but this one, IMO, ranks up there. It does have some crud/dirt on it (not sure from what) but the coin itself looks to be in tip top shape... Any thoughts on if I should submit this or is it not a high enough grade?

Do you have the coin in hand yet? I ask because from that photo it looks cleaned.

Post a better pic if/when you can.

No problem... I can't get the light right on the coin. The luster of the coin is nice and doesn't hint at being cleaned. I'll try again and see what I come up with. It's a beautiful coin in hand. Again, my camera skills aren't that great so I do the best I can.

Hey, I can sure understand the problem with lighting and pic. You have seen some of my photo attempts. The pic you posted must have sort of got "washed out" with too much light or something.

I certainly was not picking on your coin.

I wish I had better skills a coin photo taking. My camear is very OK, smarter tham me, but I have a lot of problem getting the lighting right.

Both the Newfoundland 1947C 5c. & 10c. coins still elude me,but I do have the 1947C 1c.,which never seems to turn up.I bought it off someone in Portage la Prairie who sent it to me for C$5!

Talk about Krause prices being an absolute joke!

Hi Todd - the picture looks a bit washed out to me with no lustre (may be my monitor) - the coin looks white instead of silver / grey.

That said, the details look EF and if the color is natural its a $55CAD coin. Figure your cost to slab it at around $30US including all fees and postage each way. If it has a chance of going AU / UNC then go for it, otherwise keep it raw.

OK, in an attempt to get a better image....well... I took another one! I gave the coin a quick dip in Acetone and used a qtip to roll the crud out from in between the letters and such. Most came off but some didn't. The reason the coin looked "washed out" or without luster was because it had some film on it which I think was part of the crud. Either way, I also took the picture at an angle to get the light reflecting off of it more. Not sure I did any better with this picture or not... but it is what it is...

That coin came up really nice.

I've got some coins that definitely need to be dipped in Acetone.I think you have to dip them in destilled water as well.

Much better picture. I can really see the details now.

With the 2 dark spots on neck and an abrasion below the adam's apple I think it's an AU coin ($55CAD). What might make it "ungradeable" is what appears to be a scratch that underlines CENTS.

Thank you for the compliments on the pics... I can't wait until I figure my wife's camera out... I don't know what that is under the "cents".. In one aspect it looks like a scratch but as I look at it with my loupes it looks like something from the dies.. There is another one (very faint) going upwards between the "N" and the "T" in "Cents"... It's not a gouge and doesn't look like a die crack. When looking at the coin in hand there isn't anything under the adam's apple, not sure what's going on in the pic...shadow maybe?? There are two small, and I mean small, gouges to the upper right of the crown hear the "G" in "GRA". I think those hurt it more than anything... Again, I say not a bad pick up for 9 bucks...

I've never had any issues not using distilled water after a soaking.. I think it all depends on whether you air dry or pat dry with a tissue or the like.. I just use a qtip to roll the excess off or a tissue. Some say without the distilled water you get spots..
