Something I noticed on NGC slabs... I never saw before

BroadstruckBroadstruck Posts: 30,497 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yesterday while inspecting 4 different era NGC slabs in direct sunlight (Post Office Parking Lot) with a 10x loupe (NOT a Hubble Telescope) I noticed that the NGC clear acrylic has dimples.

It's completely micro granular, as some of these spots where cast on the coin from the sunlight under rotation.

Anyone else ever seen these under close inspection... or am I coming down with a bad case of Rabbititus image

I have notice it. It really affects early proofs in my opinion, but I usually crack out the coins from slabs so it isn't an issue.

Great... always good to know I'm not alone! imageimage

Wonder if NGC does this for a reason (?) as paying a bit more attention this type of acrylic, it softens the overall look of the entombed coin IMHO.

But there have been other threads on this here and no, I won't search them for you. image

that's one reason that I don't particularly like NGC tombs. Those dimples really affect my eye when looking closely at the coin through them.

Even the early no line fatty slabs don't look completely clear to me, always seemed like something was interfering with my view. Could be that I'm 200 years older than moses, but I prefer to blame it on NGC.

I've noticed this. This makes them a pain in the arse to photograph unless you polish the grunt out of the slabs first.

10x looking at the clear acrylic in the coin cutout area and all along rest covering the white acrylic center... you'll see em EVERYWHERE!

I've seen it, but never moreso than today. I was editing images and found that I had lit a coin just the way needed to make a whole patch of those dimples glow. Now I have to reshoot image

I don't care for NGC as a whole and now I can add this to the reason why. I think I have two NGC slabs {(1961) 1C CSA-Bashlow Restrike Copper and a 1967 25C SMS MS68} I may have a moment or two to "look into these dimples" thing. I hope I don't have a eye spasm looking at them. image

For some strange oddball reason, out of some 450 slabs I have, only 6 of them are NGC. They're like that kid you stick out in left field and pray he doesn't get any fly balls. Hmmm, there's an analogy in there somewhere.
