Fixed the pics 2 different mint marks on 1952-S Lincoln cents

edit -----

OK I screwed up the first two times I tried this, I hope this is right this time.

I noticed that the mintmarks on these 1952-S Lincoln cents are different. Is that common? Thanks! image

    Your second 1953-S is actually a 1952-S.

As for any differences in mint marks, they were applied by hand back then so can float around quite a bit.

As for actual differences in font styles, I'm really not sure.

I will guess that the "3s" are shaped differently on the two coins. There are also two "S" mintmarks - one on each coin.

It's probably the rare overdate which is commonly referred to as an oversight.

When it rains, it pours Samuel. I'm just glad you're searching coins. It's fun finding "differences".

Well, I think my earlier comment is still applicable: …the "3s" are shaped differently on the two coins. There are also two "S" mintmarks - one on each coin.

They do look a little different in size but that could be attributed to different striking pressure while applying the mint mark to the die. Having one really close to the date kinda adds to the confusion as its easier to relate its size to something.

Kinda like when the moon is near the horizon, it always appears bigger than when its directly overhead. It actually does not change size but there is no point of reference while its directly overhead.

Actually it's a case of hand punching mintmarks and the fact that the mintmarks were punched into the two different dies in different locations. Any other difference observed would be from coin wear.

In other words, there is but one type of S mintmark known for 1952 cents.

It's tough to add to what coppercoins posted, Samuel. Keep searching !
