With PM's going up it price, would it be a good idea for the mint to make fractional ASE's?

PerryHallPerryHall Posts: 47,510 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'd like to see the mint make fractional ASE's using classic designs:

1 oz --- Use the Morgan or Peace dollar design

1/2 oz --- Use the walking liberty design

1/4 oz --- Use the standing liberty design

1/10 oz --- Use the mercury design

I think it would be an awsome set especially in proof.

Good idea or bad idea? Your thoughts?

I like the idea and the designoptions, but IMO until the milk spot problem is resolved on .999 US silver products it would just increase the opportunities for disappointment. image

Hmm...I like the idea too (although the 1/10 might be a bit small...it would have to be a VERY unique and interesting design to stoke my desires). The costs would certainly be small for now...and might generate even more interest and activity (meaning more opportunities for $$ gains...well, and losses).

I would rather see it with all seated liberty designs.

My thought is that it would be a nice set that would be affordable to most coin collectors unlike the AGE's are a little pricey for most collectors. It would look great in one of the large four coin slabs.

Awesome! I trust that the milk spots would be smaller on the fractionals?

    NOT A GOOD IDEA!!!

I do not 'get' fractional silver bullion. Silver is not so expensive to require fractionals to allow more folks to own it.

I guess it's because i've always had a bias against small coins. I've never been able to truly accept gold dollar coins either. Nor halfdimes. I admit it. Wish I could do something about it.

I like the idea... 1 pound, 1/2 pound, 1/4 pound, 1/12 pound. This would make for a nice four coin set in a single displayimage

A few years ago there was a service where you could submit your own stamp image and get them made for you.

The mint needs to do this. Everyone could create their own image from a template, and viola, in a few weeks they'd send you your personalized coins.

Nope, I would like to see five ounce and 10 ounce coins. Anything smaller than an ounce is not a good way to hold silver.

    I would not mind

Although I would rather just have replicas of the originals. 1 design of every type of coin we have ever had. Like the bust half dime etc...

Once complete they can finally be original again or just start over.

Doubt the public would go crazy over fractional silver.

I don't think it'll happen, but if it did I would leave the 1 ozer alone and go with something else on the half. The Canadian 1/2 oz "wolf" was kinda cool. Maybe a Stealth Fighter?

No. They have too many products, still, as-is.
They have had to cut the number of products they produce and still don't seem to be capable of timely production/shipment. Why add more in?

Unless they monetized them and made a bunch each year, the Mint's markup would be unconscionable, I am quite sure.

Once had a chat with Walmann about this idea. One thing he said that made sense to me was using the Platinum designs on silver and seeing how it flies.

Most of us cannot afford platinum, but the artistic designs are aesthetically superb.

I'd love to see some big silver coins if they were priced at a reasonable markup over melt value.image

This idea is contrary to the direction the mint has been moving lately toward reducing products. Nobody knows why they are moving this way. Maybe the baby spoons weren't big sellers but the bullion coins were. If they wanted to double-ensure a sellout all they had to do was lower the mintages, not eliminate the coins. So who knows where they're going but I do agree the set you've laid out would be very popular. --Jerry

Isn't there a higher profit percentage with fractional bullion? If so, maybe this can be used as a source for the TARP. image

I believe that one possible explanation for the reduction in mint products may have been a losing year last year. I haven't seen any mint financial reports has anyone? I wonder if they saw PMs going up last January and let out some eager planchet contracts, only to see PMs, especially Platinum, retrace and thus lost money...I can see the kneejerk reaction being to stop a lot of products. --Jerry

I'd say no on the 1/4 and 1/10 ounce coins but yes to the 1/2 ounce. If they made a 1/2 ounce ASE with the identical design as the 1 ounce ASE I'd be a buyer. Assuming of course that they priced it reasonably...which is a big assumption with the US Mint.

Making fractionals is one thing but I think they should use new original designs. Reusing classical designs, it's kind of tacky.
