The PCGS Brand or the NGC Star?

<< <i>99% of the time a PCGS 66 will be worth less than an NGC 67 Star. >>

Hmm... I think it's 50/50 at best personally.

Edited to add: It's not "drinking the kool-aid" when it's the truth. If you put the same coin in a PCGS holder and in an NGC holder, the PCGS coin is worth (or at least sells for) more. That's Coin Collecting 101 my friends. >>

    Can you provide an example?

I agree, many great coins have the NGC Star. I have sent many coins to NGC since the star designation came about. I have never made one on my own, it is tough! The ones I have really are a cut above the regular coins I have, even the PCGS coins in my collection. From what I understand about the pedigree of a couple of my coins, two of the star coins I own used to be in PCGS holders.

I also dont feel that having the CAC sticker would guarantee a star, but a star should guarantee a CAC sticker!

    NGC STARS!!!

No one is arguing that the star coins aren't nice..they absolutely are. The point is, I would take that star coin in a PCGS holder any day even at a 1 point drop. The great majority of the time (not always) you will get more for it in the PCGS holder even at the lesser grade. If you're playing the percentages, that's the way to go. There are dealers out there right now who are only dealing with PCGS slabs in this market/economy.

I really like the star designation, but I have never owned one. I have had the opportunity a number of times, but I always end up with a PCGS coin, regardless of if it is raw and I send it in or if it is pre-packaged. So in a way I have already answered that question every time I buy PCGS instead of a star NGC.

...sorry...just got a little bit of the rebel in me today...

I hate to admit it but I find I am not even interested in looking at any coins (for re-sale) in any holder other than PCGS. Of course, I've heard all the yadayada about Darkside and other stuff and how NGC rules that roost BUT I am not involved in that part of the coin market. When it comes to classic US Type... only PCGS gets proper respect on the bourse (as well as our BST)...

In the case of certain types of coins, if not most types of coins, an NGC67* can be expected to be a more attractive and a higher technical quality coin than a PCGS66. Consider an attractively toned (i.e., "rainbow) gem Morgan dollar. You can't really compare an NGC67* with a PCGS67, because for all practical purposes PCGS simply won't grade a toned Morgan dollar at the MS67 level. (Please don't show me coins from the Sunnywood or Numismatist's collection. They probably have half of such coins in existence.) So, what you find at the PCGS66 level for toned Morgan dollars are a few super gems that in fact do compare to the NGC67* coins. But, the rest are basically what you might expect at the MS66 level, whereas you can mostly anticipate an exceptional super gem toned Morgan dollar at the NGC67* level. Accordingly, it is not that unusual for dealers holding those precious super gem toned PCGS66 Morgan dollras to cross them to NGC67*.

<< <i>PCGS definitely. NGC's credibility for a quality TPG is greatly slipping I agree. NGC is going down. I wont buy any NGC coins and the ones I have I plan to get rid of. Its PCGS only >>

You guys are buying holders then. If you were buying coins you liked, if you really hated the holder, youd just resubmit to the holder of your choice, rather than get rid of.

While not a Kool-aid drinker, I definitely think that PCGS is doing much better overall than NGC over the past couple of years. I have seen too many problem coins pop up in NGC holders recently (usually cleaned type) as if NGC is trying to push the "market acceptable" envelope.*

Two glaring examples have happened to me recently. In a rush I sent off a few error coins to NGC without really looking at them. One came back bagged with PVC on the reverse. The PVC was so evident that Stevie Wonder would have bagged it. So I sent the coin to NCS to be holdered as a problem coin so I could use it in my grading course. I receive the coin back in an NGC holder! NCS "reviewed" the coin and apparently forgot to look at the reverse. They sent it to NGC, who apparently also forgot to look at the reverse, and it ends up in a regular NGC holder.

The other was an AU Franklin half I purposely cleaned using MS-70, again to use as an instructional coin. However, I only cleaned half of the obverse and half of the reverse. So the "right side" of the obverse and reverse is white and the "left side" was toned. There was a clear delineation down the center. I sent the coin to NCS and wadda ya know...it comes back in an NGC holder as a "problem-free" AU-58.

I use these as examples of when grading companies get it wrong.

*And while we are at it...what is up with NGC and MS-62 Standing Liberty Quarters? Way too many of these coins are cleaned AU-58s...come on!
