I have 6 of the quarter ouncers, but my problem with anything under the half ouncers is the date size. The date just seems small to me. Maybe that is why I am not into dimes, but nickels and quarters are fine.
I do think that a run of quarter ouncers would be a very nice set to have, and it looks like the 2008-W will be the key to the series. This time frame is similar to the 1909-S VDB Lincoln where astute collectors put a couple of these back for the time when the demand will be much greater.
If more people outside the collector community wish to put their money into something with more intrinsic value (e.g. land, art, PMs, etc.) due to rampant inflation, then all of the AGE 2006-W through the 2008-W will be winners when those few are bitten by the "I want the best!" collector bug.
I have seen this happen many times in the past where someone, and it doesn't have to be a lot of them, which will pay whatever the cost to get what they want. I remember common date Morgan dollars in MS-65 going for over $600 in the 1980's. Like the old saying goes, you only need one buyer when it comes time to sell the one coin.
IMHO, I don't think a person will have to wait 10-20 years to see appreciation in the AGE fractionals. The time frame probably will be more in the 2-4 years for such appreciation, but of course that is just an opinion.
Giving serious thought to buying one already slabbed and graded on ebay. I can't help but think it might be the best investment I could make.
(P.S. - I just climbed off the fence and bought a 1/4 2008-W MS70 on Ebay.)
I think based on that there must be more than 6000 error coins out there, as 6000 mintage should sell for much more than these do.
That isn't to say they can't do well or won't do well from here, just that nothing is certain is all I am saying.
Also I think these 1/4 coins are part of the larger bullion releases and the mint may be continuing the 1/4 for 2009 just without the W mintmark. The longer a series goes i think to a point it becomes saturated perhaps.
This hasn't been discussed much here that I remember but the w gold unc are part of the larger gold unc bullion series and that will continue to exist it seems.
The strange thing is the Jackie Robinson is also part of a continuing series yet has taken off, I am just pointing this out as something to consider. People may not buy into the gold eagles as collectors as much as they do as bullion buyers, which would lead many to skip the rarer years.
Regardless of all this, I would expect the 1/4 to sell for double or possibly more within a year and perhaps stay there for some time at the premium but it is only a guess. If this coin doesn't go up with under 10,000 then all of the gold eagle unc are doomed.
PS Also what happens to the regular bullion coins may matter to the potential for the 1/4 and 1/10 IMO.
I hope for appreciation - but it's not a bad feeling knowing that worst case scenario financially is that I end up with another 1/4 oz of gold.
It's real hard for me to perceive of that as a bad thing.
I also have a 1/4 oz in 2007-W MS70, and two 1/4s that are 2006-W MS69 - those don't seem like bad things either . . .
I confess I'm just a bullion-fancier with a fondness for trying to hit more than one bird with each rock thrown.
