1909 Lincoln Cent Die List - San Francisco Mint

I posted this in another message thread, but thought it might be of interest to Lincoln cent collectors in general.

Here's a list of dies used for Lincoln VDB cents at San Francisco. Note that dies were not necessarily used in numerical order. They were also removed for repair from time to time, so a specific reverse is not always paired with only one obverse. All VDB reverse dies were returned to Philadelphia for destruction before new dies were received.

1909-S VDB 486,480 struck; 484,000 net.

Obverse dies, Lincoln cent.
San Francisco Mint, CY 1909

#199 140,400 (all VDB)
#200 222,380 (all VDB)
#201 81,000 (all VDB)
#202 308,390 (42,700 VDB, balance plain)
#203 209,747 (all plain)

Reverse dies, Lincoln cent.

    Interesting.
I've never seen anyone mention the die # of their S mint 09s.
Is this something dug up recently RWB?

I found it while researching my RAC 1909-1915 book. The new mint director, Andrew, wanted all sorts of reports for 1909 because of the VDB problem and complains from collectors about not getting proofs. The book has the story of one collector's case, but there were likely many others.

I simply had not found a way to present the die info until prompted by another thread.

Is this type of information available for other series (IE: 1883-1912 Liberty Nickels)?

I have a copy of "The Straub Die Record Book Vol. 1" which covers 1880-1883 dated dies. It is fascinating reading, for you accountant types out there.

This information was routinely recorded by the coiner at each mint from at least the 1850s forward (and still is today). But most of the records have been lost. All we have are scattered lists – some complete, some incomplete – and the occasional journal book as Rick Snow mentioned.

Based on the locations of available information in the archives (scattered among other correspondence), I suspect that destruction of the coiner’s records (as well as the engravers records) was deliberate.
