1893 S Morgan Dollar Authentic (Cleaned) value??

I recently submitted a 1893 S Morgan Dollar that has been passed down within our family.

Thanks to this board it was advised to get it authenticated and graded by PCGS.

It came back (or was posted - have not received yet) as authentic yet cleaned

I know without scan hard but does anybody have an idea what it would be worth?

I was calling the coin a VF 25 - 35 w/out knowing had been cleaned. I am a novice.

Any help appreciated

It's kinda like a classic car. If it's all original, it's retains much more value. However, if it's been altered it still has value but usually quite a bit less and that value is determined by what a buyer is willing to pay for it. I know that doesn't help you with a numerical value, but it's the same with coins as with classic cars and antiques. Original, and unaltered is much more preferable to collectors.

Agreed.
I've noticed cleaned coins sell for big money on Heritage.
Usually over half of uncleaned price.

Cleaned or not, 1893-S attract interest in all grades and have a significant value. Determining just what that value is will largely depend upon the severity of the cleaning (how noticeable it is), the overall eye appeal of the coin, and the specific technical details grade of the coin if the cleaning is ignored. (A VF35 is worth thousands more than a VF25.) Other factors will come into play as well. In this down economy I have noticed that nearly all 1893-S go unsold at the major shows I have attended.

Assuming your coin has VF35 details, the cleaning is minor, the coin has retoned to some degree to make the cleaning not very noticeable, and it is otherwise attractive, I could easily see it sell at retail for full VF money -- around $5500. (By comparison if it were a problem-free VF35 in a PCGS holder I would expect it to sell for $7,000+)

But let's says the coin has only VF25 details, is harshly cleaned with bright surfaces, and at first glance gives no doubt that it has been cleaned. In this case such a coin might sell for only Very Good money ($3,200) or even less.
