Has anyone here ever found a 96-W dime in change or from the bank?

They came in mint sets. I think it was to commemorate 50 years of the Roosevelt dime.

They were in all the regular '96 mint sets. They weren't in the souvenir sets and if they
made premier sets that year then these were, no doubt, included.
They were the brainchild of Phillip Diehl as a thankyou to the mint set buyers and marked
the 50th anniversary of the Roosy dime.
PL's aren't extremely uncommon and these are generally well made and usually on burnished
planchets.

These were included in the 1996 Mint Set to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the design.

but neither represents a substantial number. These dimes are packaged
separately from the rest of the set and are easily lost in the paperwork
inside.
No doubt some "empty envelopes" have been tossed out with these inside.
I've heard of only a single one reportedly found in circulation.
Was that a big mistake or what ?

Yes, that was a mistake, but we've all made bigger ones. Several years ago, I bought a 1996-W dime in the original cello from a dealer for $1.

...Better you ask now than 20 years from now, probably.
In circulated condition it's probably worth only about 9 or $10.
The Mint did make premier and prestige proof sets in 1996, but the "W" dime wasn't in them - it was struck only in uncirculated, not in proof.

funny thing though about the `71 P nickels. they were only in mint sets too yet, you can occasionally find those in circulation.

A proof 71 nickel without a mint mark is a good find, but I think a circulation strike without mintmark is rather common.

Yeah, they made about 110 million of them but they're surprisingly
tough to find since they're so diluted by much higher mintages.
You should be able to find one in about 15 rolls.
Funny how a collector knows when something has been misplaced. I damn near tore the place apart looking for it.

I didn't know that about the '71 P nickels. I've put together a couple Whitman albums and never had trouble finding any dates from 1960-date. Was the 71 D made for circulation?
