Seller sent wrong coin, should he send correct coin..

before I send the wrong one back?

I let him know that he sent the wrong coin. He said send the wrong one back then he would send the right one.

What bugs me is that I paid him same day with paypal so he knows I'm a paying customer. This is a $4 coin plus shipping so no big dollar amount. I've got perfect feedback.

He claims he has 6 of the same coin and didn't know which one to send. Well it wasn't the one with the black gunk on the reverse.

This isn't a big amount it's just that he pictures a nice one and sends another.

By the way he says the coin pictured is the one I'll get.

I emailed back that since I payed first and got the wrong coin that he should send the right coin next.

What do you think?

A lot of buyers might never get around to mailing back the coin. What I do if I ship a wrong coin is send the right coin with a SASE for them the return the other coin in. --Jerry

He's gonna think you're trying to scam him.

You should send him your coin back first. That's the way things usually go, even when the seller is at fault.

No... this has happened to me numerous times. As long as the seller already agreed that he made a mistake, just send back the wrong coin and include a printout of your email conversation (or some sort of note reminding him what the issue was). More likely than not, he'll want to rectify the situation right away in order to avoid any potential bad feedback, and may even reimburse you for your return postage costs.

You don't want the ugly coin. Most sellers won't exchange or refund until you return the bad one and paypal would also require you send it back.

Depends on him & his attitude as the resposibility of getting the RIGHT coin to the buyer is on the seller's back.

Basically, you DON'T need to send the wrong coin sent by mistake or not - at your expense either.

Just let PayPal know that item received is not as pictured and or described.

If he gets huffy just do what you gotta do. He'll get the negative - not you.

If I sold a coin worth very little and shipped the wrong coin, I'd send the right one immediately
and tell the customer to keep the other for the inconvenience I've caused him.

Hey - that's just me, though. I cannot EVEN believe his position after acknowledging that this is his mistake.

If I did this, I would send him the right coin and have him keep the other, unless it was a a high dollar amount, then I would hope he sends it back, if not, My error my problem, case closed.

IMO if your worried about getting ripped off over a $4 coin you shouldn't have bought from him in the first place. Send it back and ask that he make a partial refund of your Paypal payment in the amount necessary to return the coin. If he sends you the correct coin and does the partial refund, he/she is a good guy. If he sends you the correct coin and does NOT give you partial refund for your shipping expenses, chalk it up to a bad experience and don't buy from him/her again. Just figure for $4 you got on education on who not to buy from. If he doesn't send the correct coin or do a refund, then they are a bad seller and you should stay far away from them and out them here on the board IMO.

Edited to add: I also think if the seller is worried about you scamming him by keeping a $4 coin, he shouldn't be selling coins on the internet either. Save your firepower and worry for when it matters.

    Mike,
How much is the "wrong" coin worth? If it's less than $4 and the seller had any sense, he would tell you to keep that one for your inconvenience and he would send the correct one. At the very least, you should have gotten a thorough apology, which apparently didn't happen either. Now, rather than have a pizzing contest, which just wastes your energy, you can either keep what you got and forget it, or send it back as seller suggests. Either way, that's not a seller I would do business with.

If you paid by PayPal, they require you send it back before he sends the correct coin. Granted, it's a cheap item, but those are the rules. I had a buyer at the end of 2007 who didn't understand that. Eventually he sent back a Silver Eagle instead of a $25 Platinum. That was after he stole his money with a chargeback.

He should send you out the right coin with material in the package for you to ship the wrong coin back as to keep you from incurring ANY cost.

    10 to 1 this wasn't a mistake.

I don't think $4 falls within the "sweet spot" for scammers....give him the benefit of the doubt.

I can't find my first email but I informed him I'd received the wrong coin and here's the following emails.

    Seller:
I'm not sure which coin to send I have six 1972 Ikes I would need you to tell me which coin you you would like to exchange for. Steve

    Me:
Steve, I'd like the one you took the picture of. It has a small spot near the 'I' in liberty that should differentiate it from the others. Mine has some gunk on the reverse.
    Thanks, Mike

    Seller:
I'll need the first coin back then I'll send you the closest match. Steve

    Me:
I sent the money first originally and got the wrong coin. It would be only fair if you send the right coin next.

    Mike

Seller: First I'm not sending another untill that one is returned That's my policy. You have the right Coin Now 1972 Ike, if it's damaged I'll replace it. There is no way to prove that the pictured coin is not the on you won I will refund your $3.00 minus shipping if you will return it. I have never had anyone make such a claim in my Ten years on Ebay. Waiting for a response Steve

    From his auction:
Actual Images of item are shown above

I guess what pulled my chain here is that this happened once before with another seller. He sent the wrong coin, worth about 3 times the one I bought. I informed him of this. He said send it back and he would send the correct one. I did so, insured. A few weeks later I got the right one and I'm out the shipping and insurance.

An awful lot of discussion over a $4 coin.........must be a slow day!!!!!!!!!!!image

Really just send the wrong coin back with the understanding that he will pay you for the out of pocket return postage....but if I were the seller I would tell you to keep the wrong coin and send you the correct coin and move on........again this seems like a lot of work for a $4 coin.........IMHO

Do you have the ebay auction link? Was it an auction, a single buy-it-now or a quantity buy-it-now?

Basically I don't send stuff back unless it costs over $100. My time's worth more than the effort. I just bought an UNC piece of currency for $25, it arrived in VF. Am I going to send it back? Nope. The seller's going to give me back 60% of what I paid for it, or he's getting negative feedback. His screw-up. Not mine.

BTW, my approach to this (pending me actually seeing what the auction stated) would be just give him negative feedback, start a not-as-described dispute, and get your money back. Timewasting seller.
