Barndog I see things differently, I see the rim worn off on the lower obv, why are you saying the opposite, what am I missing? >>

do you see a 21 in the date? I see remnants, that's my point. No other area of the coin shows remnants near the rim. Maybe this is a characteristic of Peace dollars. I don't know. I collect stuff as big as the rock that eagle is standing on.

Forgive me if this comes off as too blunt.

CONS: The strike is less than average, even for a 21, and the coloration in the obverse fields, and the outline of the eagle on the reverse ugly. The wear on the date kills it for me. Granted you can tell a 21 Peace from the rest of the series even with NO date visible, but the date is an important part of this coin, I wouldn't like one that wasn't clear.

PROS: The coin certainly looks original, and the wear has happened in an even, overall decent manner (except as noted). It would be a neat addition if someone were building a raw dansco album of VFish peace dollars, rather than looking at a hole in the 1921 spot. Outside of that purpose, I don't really like it.

It all comes down to money. If you spent $50 its amazing! If you spent $500 it really really sucks.

I am not as concerned about the grade as much as the surviving population of the date with these striking characteristics

I think 35 or 40 is not the issue... look at the date and the reverse OF S

It is a coin that makes coin collecting what it is...

Definitely a 1921, and it's too bad it's been circulated, the strike on the hair looks better than average. I agree with Russ, value of about $100

Look at the beak of the eagle. '21's are different than the others. This beak says '21.

The planchet is slightly tapered. That's why there's a lack of definition at 12 o'clock on the reverse. Totally natural and mint made.

It IS a '21, if you know your Peace dollars. It isn't an exceptional strike...it's average. And I wouldn't pay $100 for it...maybe $30.

There’s an illustrated table of relative strike (obverse only) for 1921 Peace dollars in the new book on Peace dollars from Whitman. It might be helpful.
