No other guesses? Well okay then...it's one of the canceled dies recovered on the grounds of the old Carson City mint. A few years ago I was visiting the Nevada State Museum and had the privilege of spending time with Ken Hoppel who was the person restoring the dies for the museum. He brought out a tub of dies and as he was setting the tub down, I spotted this one and grabbed it out of the tub. All involved thought it was a quarter die but I recognized it as a twenty-cent die. Unfortunately, much of the obverse had rusted away and no diagnostics were present to suggest it was THE obverse die that struck the 18-20 known 1876-CC coins. Since the CC mint was delivered several die pairs for the twenty-cent piece in 1876, odds are it was one that was not used to strike coins. Nonetheless, it was a good day!

This one is special to me because my 7yr old son pulled it out of a 2X2 box at yee ole coin shop. Mr. coin dealer then sold it to him at a price I don't think anyone else could have received.
