Why is registered mail so slooooooooow?

PCGS shipped out on 01/16 and still not here in Cary, NC! What makes registered mail so much slower than a regular stamped envelope? Does it need to be "checked in" at every stop along the way? Just curious (as well as impatient)

Yep, verified and signed for by each person that handles it.

I can't stand registered mail.

The reason it takes so long is that it travels only in locked cages and has to be signed for each time it is taken in and out of a cage by a postal employee. I don't believe they ever go air, even if you pay for Priority Mail. I'm pretty sure it's always shipped on trucks in special USPS locked cages.

I can't substantiate this, but I've heard that it's your job if you are the last employee to sign for a registered parcel and it turns up missing. So no chances are taken.

The US Mint ships it's bullion orders to retailers via registered. I guess the bright side is that you can be sure the items will get to you...eventually.

im still waiting for a package,not from PCGS, from the 15th, tracking # still shows it sitting at post office since the 17th.

It helps to be in a larger town (a hub for the mail so to speak) rather than little rinky dink towns

One reason it's so slow is that many common carriers can't or won't handle shipments due to the restrictions.

Did you check your Post Office to see if they are holding it? Sometimes, a notice is left if no one's home to sign for the item, but the notice gets lost or misdelivered. The most recent four Registered items I've sent/received were delivered in two days, door-to-door, including one that traveled coast to coast.

I wouldn't worry too much. Yes, it's frustrating.

I just had a Registered package I sent from Philadelphia to Buffalo take 2 weeks to make it!

The tracking info was never updated until the day it was delivered. Just said "Accepted" at my PO the whole time.

Now if they would just update the tracking info, people would get a lot less frustrated!

i hear ya, my last one sent took 2 weeks. ct to cali. the safest way though. had regular mail lost but never registered.

It's tracked internally by the postal circus. Why they don't provide that info on their website is beyond me.

I note the slow, registered delivery in my ebay listings and tell anyone that wants faster, riskier mail service to not bid on my coin. It helps to get it out right away and send an email to the buyer with the tracking number and a reminder that registered is slower, but safer.

I live IN CA and it took a week to get back from pcgs. But better safe than sorry I guess?
