There are many reasons. 1) might want hole fillers (I did a few of my hard to locate mercs that way) 2) could have been treasured because someone that passed left them to the person. 3) could be a gift that someone wanted to have for whatever reason. (I posted a 1923 Peace dollar and some people thought I was crazy for sending it off to be graded. It was a gift for my daughter and she wanted it graded)
I'm sure there are others; that just what popped into my head.

The only three reasons that make sense to me is 1. An idiot did not realize that his common date coin in G was common and had unrealistic pride of ownership at the same time he was introduced to slabbed coinage. 2. A grading set- someone wanted a certain date in PO-1 through MS6X. 3. A bet- two collectors agree to wager on the outcome of a submission. The slabbing fees are cheap if split between the two, or if the one who paid expects to win a handsome sum.
