For this design, the edge is an integral part of the design. Although the edge layout was by Charles Barber, it’s still important in expressing the coin’s message.
Will the noble and august major coin authentication and grading services consider the edge of the coin in arriving at the final numerical guess of a grade? Would they use split grades such as MS-70/68/69-1/2, or just average the thing out?

They'll grade the coin it total, Roger.
They must just have assumed to treat it like other coinage with lettering and given more concern to coming up with a holder for this coin.

Does anyone really know what the difference is between a MS69 and a MS70 besides luck of the draw? It will be of interest to see what the PCGS holder for the UHRs will look like and whether it will allow full viewing of the entire rim.

Of course you might want to send them both into PCGS and keep the one that gets graded MS-70 in the holder.
