I've gotta admit guys, all this talk that I've been reading on these boards about acetone, taco bell napkins and everything else is freakin' me out. This is exactly why I don't buy on e-bay or anything else anymore. I'm sure these comments are going to pi** alot of people off, but AT on any coin that will eventually make it's way onto the market is exactly that....AT. How is this any different than the "colorized rare investment grade Obama quarters" that are flooding a gullible America now.
I've always liked to think that my toned coins were toned by guys sitting around a cabinet with the fire going, smoking cigars and drinking brandy at the turn of the century discussing Numismatics, not putting them in Taco Bell napkins in a windowsill. Am I alone on this subject? I hope not. I see people bidding 600.00 for 1883-O MS-63 Morgan Dollars that look like they were colored with a crayon, and it makes me wonder what's really important in this hobby....
This guy still has all his whizzed, dipped and thumbed Peace Dollars that he purchased from the "respectable magazine advertisers" 30 years ago, just so he can look at them from time to time to remind himself how stupid he was....anyway, don't get me wrong, I respect alot of the opinions I read on these boards...I don't post much, obviously, but I just had to rant....

My personal philosophy about 90% of US coins is that if it looks nice, I don't care whether it was done through artificial or natural means. It just looks good.

Some people say "they're my coins, and I can do what I want".

I believe we are a free country, still. I don't like how things always go, but if Taco Bell sells more tacos and coins get more attention, then get the value meal and a dozen napkins. I've got widgets

I agree with what you are saying except the acetone part.
Acetone does not in any way tone a coin it only removes contaminants
that can adversely tone a coin. It does the opposite that you are claiming it to do.

I did have the same thoughts in mind. We hear so much about crap coins being cleaned, colored, toned, washed, basically doctored and how links are put to Ebay pointing out coins that have been messed with but then on the very same board read about the technique of doing such work and how wonderful it works or doesn't. A bit confusing.

If you couple the knowledge of how it is done with the ability to recognize the results - as you could have learned here - you can become a more discerning collector.

Much is written here that is very tongue in cheek.

its anaconda`s fault
he got the ball rolling with his toned morgans here awhile back.
since then everyones going gah gah for toned/colorful coins
and the at/nt debate raged on for a few years after. now its,
i dont care how the color got there, i love em anyway, all over the place.
oh well, the hobby is still big enough for anyone and everyone.
live and let live.
