  Check out your library for books on St. Gaudens. You'll find a great deal in books in relation to the coin and symbolism of all his works.

  Go to Agustus Saint Gaudens residence in New Hampshire and learn first hand all that you can.

  A very good approach might be this: Put yourself in Teddy Roosevelt's shoes, one afternoon, gazing at the array of US coins on his desk in the Oval during his first days in office. Make it a hypothetical encounter. Then jump ahead some years (look at the Red Book and pick a date when all issues have finally changed) and imagine him looking at the new issues: the SLQ, the Walking Half, the various gold issues, and there at the far end is a Saint. Keep this rather short, like a paragraph or two, and don't engage in hyperbole. Don't over-reach.
  
  My point is this: the Saint was the end (and best) culmination of a re-vamping of all of the US coinage, and so its artistic merit is best seen in its context -- as part of a complete re-design.

  RWB's book on the subject. Read it and synthesize it.
  
  Of course, you could ask Roger to do all of that for you, but then he would be the one deserving of the scholarship.
