So after I soak in mineral oil... what's step 2 to degrease???

I need to crack and soak a copper token in mineral oil before I send it to NGC.

What do I use to degrease it... acetone, then rinse with distilled water

Sorry I just have never futzed with a coin before...

also if someone knows a quick way to crack a ANACS white chase holder that would be handy too!

(I normally just crossover and haven't cracked a slab in over 15+ years.)

After a mineral oil soak... A quick dip in acetone, then distilled water. Air dry the coin too...

As far as cracking the old ANACS white slab... A small vise grip works well, or vise grip pliers to the slabs edges.

A bolt cutter works great on most slabs. One snip toward the middle of the coin, maybe 1/2" inch from its edge.

And how did the mineral oil work? I would think WD-40 with an acetone rinse might work, though I've never tried it. I like the force of the WD-40 to do some of the work.

I am just thinking that mineral oil isn't going to make the grease move. Mineral oil isn't a solvent. If it is crusty grease, it might loosen it up a little.

Can you post some pictures so we know what you are working with?

Yep, misunderstood. Why soak it in mineral oil? What's the crud on it that needs to be removed? I'd try just acetone. I have also used Blue Ribbon on copper and it works quite well. A quick rinse in acetone will remove any remaining BR.

I soaked some ultra crusty copper in olive oil. After a few months I was able to remove some loosened up crud with a q-tip though a rose thorn was suggested. I just patted the coin dry in a paper towel and everything was fine. I did not put the coin in a slab and it still is in good shape.

From reading here I guess I'd use mineral oil the next time I try. I'm sure soap and water would get the oil off followed by a rinse to get the soap off but there was no need to get any oil off my coin. In fact soap and water might remove some crud right off the bat even before soaking in oil. If it works it would work a lot faster too so might be worth thinking about. I haven't tried acetone on copper. I think one would worry a lot more about high grade coins than about the low grade ones I've played with.

Place slab on thin side on a towl on a hard surface (e.g., concrete floor). With a hammer use small short blows to the sides (rotate slab). You want to hear some cracking, but no real shattering of the plastic (if plastic splinters off and flies across the room you're hitting it too hard). Eventually the holder will pop apart or come apart enough to pry it apart (mind any sharp plastic pieces). Usually the coins stays stuck in the insert; the towl is there to cushion the coin in case it pops out. This works with PCGS, NGC and old ANACS slabs. I STRONGLY SUGGEST you wear some form of EYE PROTECTION. Be careful. I have done >100 slabs that way and never had a problem except for some flying plastic splinters.

Why not just use isoparaffin, otherwise known as volatile mineral oil. It is a very light grade of mineral oil that evaporates at room temperature. You could just soak it like regular mineral oil in a closed jar and then remove it from the jar and gently pat it dry with a cloth to remove the excess and then the residue would just evaporate. I think regular mineral oil also evaporates, only it takes really long at room temp, like months. I believe they sell volatile mineral oil in craft stores for use as odorless paint thinner or something like that. I am familiar with it because a company I used to work for that made softgel capsules used to use it as an encapsulatable alternative to alcohol for use as a carrier for perfumes for twist off cosmetic capsules.
