Don't you love it when you find a surprise variety?

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a big fan of most varieties. I'm not against them, but rather I find the differences too minute to be worth the extra cost. For those who do like varieties, I'm impressed by the level of detail you can spot and hope you make some money on something I sell and miss the attribution

That said, I do like varieties that are neat and easy to see, which made this coin a pleasant surprise. It was consigned a a 1796 cent, and I was happy with that... I like anything that starts 17XX and I can't complain about a coin that's just "nice." I didn't like my first set of pictures, so I reshot it last night, and was I was focusing the camera, I noticed something in LIBERTY that just didn't look quite right, and I was pretty sure that there was a Red Book variety from this era. So I whipped it out, and lo and behold, the coin doubled in value

Am I the only one that loves when this happens?

I'll be the first, or at least one of the first, to stand up and say I love varieties from coins date 1793-1840 (and several beyond 1840).

With that said, you got yourself a nice LIHERTY Large Cent from 1796

Yep. And it doesn't matter how into and informed of varieties you are, a pleasant surprise comes up now and then and they are all the better because you can appreciate them. Nice find, Jeremy.

The fun thing about varieties is that knowledge is king, not overpaying for a minute difference, but finding one on a coin you own or at a shop. Cool discovery. I have owned an IHC cent since 1958 that last year I looked more closely at and sure enough it was a 94/94 overdate. That tickled me oodles more than paying for one.

Make that fifty-thousanded in value, then... or something like that. I figure an old Red Book is surely not the way to go on determining a price.
