PCGS grades are in ... and I got an odd response

Hi folks-

I submitted some pieces to PCGS to grade and got a "Genuine" grade with the comment - 86 no decision / refund. Do any of you know what would cause a no decision? The piece was a "typical" circulated 1875-S twenty-cent piece so if anything, I expected a "cleaned" or "altered surface" comment ... but a no decision? Interesting.

Any thoughts?

P.S. For fun I also included a really worn piece and it make PO-01!

They don't list 86 on their grading page. Maybe it just means they eighty-sixed it.

So the Professional Coin Grading Service decided NOT to make a decision and has issued a refund to you?

That sounds pretty

to me. Isn't it their job to make a determination whether or not it's genuine?
If they can't tell, who can?

Well they did designate it as genuine based on the online submission results . I am assuming they could not determine whether or not it is "gradable." I wonder if it will be returned in a body bag or in a "genuine" holder?

I don't have the coin in front of me, so I don't remember what it should be (other than an 1875-S). It may have been a piece that was so worn that they could not determine if it indeed had a mintmark (Andy may be on to something there!). I can't remember if I sent 1 or 2 potential PO-01 candidates. I won't know until I check my paperwork what was expected for the grade.

I received the coins and as I guessed, the "odd response" was for an 1875-S twenty-cent piece in very low grade. My guess is that they felt unsure about the originality as I was able to detect the top of the date and mintmark. Ironically, an 1875-S they did grade was more worn and it got a PO-01...and it took me a while to find the mintmark. I will post some images when I can.

The other funny thing was that I had a nice AU 1832 CBH that they called "questionable toning." Years ago it was a nice, white "original" half (yes, I am sure it was dipped at one time but no indication of such other than the color) with pristine surfaces and it was absolutely "market acceptable." I broke it out of an ANACS cache and dropped into a paper envelope. Over the years it toned a light to medium golden color which is far more appealing to me than when it was white. PCGS, apparently, didn't like the color and slabbed it as genuine (questionable color). I'll post an image of that one later as well.

If they could not tell the date or mintmark they will return the coin no decision / refund, it will come back to you raw. You see these a lot with lowball coins.
