If I recall correctly, the advertising campaign did run with the introduction of the Washington Dollar but since the paper dollar didn;t go away, any possible interest was soon lost.

I imagine it will take some type of Congressional Hearing to figure out the obvious but until then, any promotional money for the presidential dollar coins is simply a waste of tax payer dollars!

Congress can be incredibly stupid at times.

Isnt the whole reason why they cant get rid of the paper buck is that the kennedy's (and others) are protecting those jobs of the company that makes the Dollar paper?

Isnt that company's only real business the US goverment?

...............yes, i understand the paper money issue, BUT! where is the big promotion that was promised? they have to, at least, make the public aware of the coins! i don't know how many times i received blank stares from clerks and others when i handed them the coins. people aren't aware at all of the dollar coins! image

I think what they are doing is being very gun shy.

The reason I say this is that any SBA dollar collector, over 30 years of age will recall the rather elaborate SBA dollar promotion campaign.

In fact, there was a country music song, She's the queen of the Silver Dollar (some took iot as a SBA promotion, though not seriously ). ANYWAY, in ashort, the coin was ugly, the design SUCKED and it was an embarassment. I kind of liked them, but it was difficult to get folks to take them.

With pres bucks, the local Metro here in DC has posted signs about how they are taking the coins, although, NOT all machines take them.

SO, I agree, however, its NOT been well accepted by the public and YES that in Congress fault to a degree. However, and in a very strange way, the smooth pres bucks did more for the series than anything else. So, if you primary publicity is a screw up, the future does not look bright.

I do collect them in proof and uncs and yes, have a smooth edge one as well. I actually like the series.

The government should give out 1000 dollar coins per person as part of the new stimulus package, that would make them circulate.image

Funny, I never gave thought to Kennedy 'protecting' the paper dollar. Seeing how Crane Paper is in Dalton, Mass.....and without that company, there aint no moe Dalton, it DOES give slight credence to the statement, whether it's true or not. But, after viewing the ORIGINAL Frost/Nixon interview (which is 88 mins of nothing but Watergate, and a damn fine DVD to watch), I don't think the public EVER finds out the REAL truth.
I'll come up with something, eventually.

Personally I think that is unfounded here say as the paper which is used for US Currency is used across all denominations. Yes there would be a drop in business but not an end to business.

I think the real reason that the paper dollar is not eliminated is that Congress is afraid of the immediate repercussions from the general public as the General Public does not like being "forced" to do anything, even if its for the good of the Nation. The reason for this is that everybody defines "good" differently.

The most difficult thing about change is the actual change itself as people are very adaptable.

I think they use Crane paper for all the other denominations too. Eliminating the one dollar bill would certainly cut into their business, but not all of it.
