1989 Collectors Choice Upper Deck Question....

Hi Folks, I am a coin collector and on the other forum. I have a 1989 Collectors Choice Upper Deck complete set that is still shrink wropped with the Toys R Us price tag on it ($49.99). I am not into Baseball cards or any cards at all. My buddy back in 89 (who collects BB cards) worked at Toys R Us and said buy these as they will be worth more 'SOMEDAY'. Well I bought the box for $49.99. It is factory sealed with the Toys R US price sticker still on it. The box has been kept in an air conditioned setting since new. The seram wrap around the box is flawless as the blurry pix wil show.

My questions are: Did I spend too much money in 89? What is the value of this set?

    Sorry to say but it's probably worth the same or a bit less today. 1989 Upper Deck may be the most over produced set in card history. Other contenders are 1987-1991 Topps and 1989 Donruss

    $50 for a factory sealed 1989 UD set was a fair deal in 1989, a good deal in 1994, a great deal in 1999, a good deal in 2004 and now a fair deal again in 2009.
    Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
    Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

    The first item I ever sold on Ebay was my 89 Upper Deck set...went for $125, I think, without a picture back in the Fall of 2000.

    If you open it, make sure you take out card #1.
    Griffey still sells for solid money if it grades high.

    Open it and pull out that dinged up, OC, 1/2 hologram Griffey.

    No plans to open it, are there any other card worth there weight???

    Open it and pull out that dinged up, OC, 1/2 hologram Griffey.

    Randy Johnson RC......there are also some cool error/variation cards, but unsure on factory sealed sets in that regard.

    The #1 card, Ken Griffey Jr. The Randy Johnson RC. Maybe the Gary Sheffield RC, that might go for $2 on Ebay. The Nolan Ryan 3D card is a fan favorite, worth about $1. John Smoltz RC, worth about $2.

    I think you paid FMV for the set.

    Damn sets were close to $200 at one point. Did I sell my full case? Hell no, I was waiting till it hit $500/set after Griffey Jr. set the All time HR record! LMAO

    The "book value" on these is $100 and they usually sell for around $35 to $40 on ebay. So like most of the late 80's and early 90's cards, they have not made anyone rich yet.

    Actually there are variations of all the error cards. They are just the more common variations. image
