Help me grade this 1953 topps mickey mantle

Hi, I purchased this 1953 topps mantle on ebay. The seller said it was authentic and untrimmed or unltered or he would send a full refund. What to you guys think it would grade PSA? It has a small mark as you can see. Should i have it graded with "No Q's" or just leave it? Thanks

I think you should start asking for that refund.

    Hi Caleb,

It's an authentic and untrimmed reprint!

I'd file asap if you haven't already.

Could you post a link to the auction?

  • That is what his listing said but in an email i asked him "will you give me a full refund if your card is trimmed or in anyway unauthentic" his reply was "OK, Sure" Then in a later email he promised to give a full refund if it doesn't come back authentic from PSA

by the way the auction is worded i feel you are going to have problems with this clown. First, I think if you send it back to him for a refund he is going to say that it is not the card he sent you. His statement "you should be able to tell by the picture if it is authentic or not" bothers me too.

  • if you send it in to PSA i think that would void returning the card within 7 days

  • So why exactly do you think this item is unauthentic. Personally i don't think it would grade near an 8.5 because of that mark.
  • tennesseebankertennesseebanker Posts: 5,434 ✭✭✭
I assume you have already paid for the card ??

If you have, you may want to ask what recourse you may have via Paypal and or your Crdit card if you paid with one.

The card stock is wrong. Here's a real one:

The card is clearly a fake. File a SNAD via Paypal right away and get the ball rolling. I hope you paid via a CC also just in case PP tries to stick ya.
  • From the auction:

    "the card measures 2.5 x 3.5."

    That's the wrong size for a 1953 Topps, which should measure 2 5/8 by 3 3/4.

  • It appears to be a 1991 Archive card. Plus, if it were real, it is clearly at least PSA 6 or better which makes it a $2000 card. Did you really think you were getting a possible PSA 7 or 8 card for $600?
  • slantycouchslantycouch Posts: 1,704 ✭✭✭
It looks like a 1991 Topps Archives, but they had some sort of notation on the reverse, right?

The card had been previously listed at $499 with no takers. OP should keep copies of both auctions and all pictures before they disappear! Also keep all the questions and answers. He says in the Q&A that the card is not his and belongs to a friend.

It is from the reprints Topps came out with in the early 90s. On the bottom of the reverse it should say Topps Baseball Archives The Ultimate 1953 Series. Somehow this has been removed from this card. It is clearly not a 1952 as it states in the auction. I hope you are able to get your money back. There is little very remote chance the seller does not know what he has but with all the red flags he is probably looking for someone to scam.

I dont think anything has been removed, I think it is just a bad attempt to duplicate a 53 Mantle, just a counterfeit someone made.

There is no possibility that this card comes back as being authentic. He is then going to say that you switched the card and that is not the card he sent you. I really hope you have not sent the money yet.
The guy is pretty much saying that he card is fake in his item description.

this must be some kind of a joke
  • It will come back with a number grade. It just won't come back as a 1953 Topps. It is from the 1953 Topps reprint set. Sorry, but technically I think he's got you.

Define authentic: it is an authentic Topps card from their reprint set.

  • << <i>Wow, if he would have only asked before he bought it!! >>

The buy obviously thought he was getting a deal probably did not want someone to outbid him.

I hope everything works out for you, good luck getting your money back!

    Hi Caleb,

one problem I see is that he listed the card under the following categories:
    Sports Mem, Cards & Fan Shop > Cards > Baseball MLB > Singles (1950-59) > Non-Graded > 1953.

I'm pretty sure that category group doesn't include REPRINTS, unless there was an actual reprint made that year, which I doubt.

The guy could be shady and/or super ignorant about sportscards. He actually does try to describe and photograph the card in a very novice way by pointing things out like a tear .... "There is a slight separation (pictured) at this spot", and a stain .... "The only flaw is a light stain in the lower left corner on the front (and the lower right on the rear)."

He doesn't seem to have ever sold any sportscards before either, for whatever that's worth! Maybe he's trying to recoup his loss from being taken by someone that sold this card to him!!!!?????

You probably should contact eBay and PayPal, asap, to see what steps you should take to file successful claims. I have a funny feeling that this seller isn't going to make it easy for you.

Regardless of whichever scenario seems reasonable, I would definitely be talking to someone at eBay and PayPal asap. Ask for their advice or recommendation about sending to PSA to prove authenticity or not.

jimq112 made a very good point in his post.

Storm always has very good knowledge in these matters too. I'd PM him for his input if he hasn't posted yet.

I hope everything works out for you image

"...So why exactly do you think this item is unauthentic. ..."

I am pretty confident that I know what a real one looks like.

The one you are showing is not a "real one."

File a SNAD with PayPal immediately.

The seller's TOS are meaningless, and your refund will be granted.

I suspect the seller is subject to the 21-day hold at PayPal, but file fast.

"Card is a counterfeit and is significantly not as described."

The seller may or may not be a crook. I dunno that.

I do know that the economy is all messed-up, and many previously "honest"
sellers can be expected to go bad during the coming months/years.

Next time ask before you buy. Or, know what you are buying.

You might not get off as easy the next time.
