O/T I joined the ranks of the unemployed today.

I was laid off today after six years for my ex company in the new housing construction business. Funny thing is I sold 5 homes for my ex company in the last 5 weeks. Anyone know of any leads in the Pittsburgh area I am all ears.

Thanks,

Don

Just a quick note and you may already know this - they legally owe you the commission money on those sales.

I too have been out of work since September in the Chicago area. The times are tough. I was lucky enough to have saved but that can only last so long. Good luck to you Don

I'm very sorry to hear you joined the umemployment ranks today. I'm a union worker in the movies and have been getting umeployment checks since the end of October. It really sucks I can tell you, but I've learned a valuable lesson. Save every penny you can when you are working cause it goes fast.

    Hang in there!

    Brian

Thanks Stevek. They are paying me for those sales plus a few others that were sold before that.

    Clemaz,

Sorry to hear about your situation. Times are real tough all over. I am an attorney on Long Island and most of my clients/deals involve real estate. Things have not been this bad in the 20 years that I have been on my own. Just take it one day at a time and do what you have to to get by. Things will turn around. BEST OF LUCK!

Good salespeople can always find jobs - it might be necessary to "think outside the box" and begin a sales career in a new field if necessary, and perhaps going far outside the box isn't even necessary - the housing industry of course has numerous offshoots such as lumber, plumbing supplies, electrical supplies, etc., and other housing components that need salespeople.

If you haven't found anything by the end of February, you might be able to catch on with the Pirates as a middle reliever. Are you a lefty?

Unemployed folks might consider being "self-employed." Once you work
for yourself, you will never be at the mercy of anybody or any circumstance
that cannot be controlled or overcome.

Find some goods or services that you think are cool, and find somebody
to pay you to provide those goods/services.

A good time to start an enterprise is WHILE the unemployment checks
    are still rolling in.

There are likely to be more new millionaires made in the next 10-years
than have existed in all of history.

    .........

    And, NEVER Give Up. NEVER!

    Stay HOPEFUL.

Said to hear but hang in there.

Lets hope 2009 is better for all of us.
  • I don't have much to add either, but i do feel for you guys and all the decent folks that have been and are going to be laid off in the near future. I think we all take our jobs for granted, just a little bit and when you see friends, family, and hard working people losing employment, it certainly gives us pause for thought.
Try to stay positive guys, and network all you can. It might take longer than you'd like, but good things happen to good people.

As many movie people as we have here, we need a script about
baseball cards. Maybe a baseball-card heist, or a series of sports-memo
thefts/scams followed up by the BIG SCORE.

    Start typing, boys.

    ////////////////

I fear DRYS, except as a trade. I did great from $5 to $10, but now I am skeert.

FRPT may be ready for a run. Maybe not.

I'm with you on a baseball card script. I saw that horrible one (Diminished Capacity) at Sundance last year. I just can't figure out what the script could be about. I have plenty of writer friends who would be anxious to jump on a good idea.

I like DRYS up to $20 or until the S&P hits 975 then I'm dumping. If Alcoa falls back to $10 then I'm in there too.

Your baseball-card script needs elements of "Dead Heat On A Merry-Go-Round."

dead heat 1966 - script available

And, elements of "The Thomas Crown Affair," 1968 version.

    crown script available

It's an evil movie like "The Usual Suspects," but delivers redemption better.

It's as commercial/slick as "The Heist," but not boring and stupid.

AND, it takes you deep into the bbc/memo biznez; at least the dirty/funny/greedy
    side of that biz.

It will have a kid in it, but he needs to be harder than the Terminator kid.

A HOFer - maybe thought to be dead but turns out to be alive - conspires
with the kid to double-cross the other crooks.

    THOUSANDS of possibilities.

    Clemaz,

If I remember correctly, you are a south Pittsburgh guy - maybe Fayette. I think Sony's troubles really hurt that area. However, I've heard that the Westinghouse move to Cranberry has put a bit of heat in that whole area. This may turn into a real opportunity for you. I hope it works out well for you and your family.

I saw in today's paper that Alcoa is laying off a bunch of folks....here in the Cleveland area they are talking about around 100 will lose jobs at the local plant. My dad worked there years ago as a maintenance welder when the going was good...nowadays it tough everywhere....I'm retired and I'm even having issues making ends meet and had to get a part time job. Minimum wage but at least it's something.

I wish us all the best of luck in '09! I can say that we added one employee in November and made an offer to one in December so some people are still hiring. Just keep looking. As someone up above said, think outside the box. I seriously wish you all the best of luck with your job searches. Here's to hope that '09 will be better than '08!
  • Warehousing wasnt a great job but with overtime being 30 bucks an hour and being able to work as much as i wanted , the money
was pretty good . I have started looking outside the box . I remain positive about 2009 , thinking itsgoing to turn out just fine . I dont
wanna have to resort to selling my cards off . Although i do have a high energy 9 year old son that i can hire out to do odd jobs.....image

  • There is NO reason to be unemployed in Pittsburgh, if anything the economy has helped us here. I dont think the OP was too serious, due to him not answering my pm of help. If im wrong, best of luck, I hear to get there early for the best cheese.
