In real estate, it's all about location. In coins, it's all about eye appeal.

I made that statement in another thread and it made me wonder what most people consider to be the most important factor when evaluating a coin. For a coin that you need at a price you can afford...

Do you agree that eye appeal is the most important factor?

If not, what's most important to you? Why?

For me, coins are more of an aesthetic pursuit than an intellectual one, so yes, I agree with you.

Just like women you need eye appeal first before you examine the other attributes. image

A farmer thinks different about land than a developer. A collector thinks different about coins than a dealer. Almost everyone compares things to money or value.
Sometimes it's about gathering. Like the crops in the field. The seeds are sown, the harvest is reaped, but it's a season that never ends, in spite of the changing colors or what is most important for some, to others it is more about building.

For the purposes of making money or friends, collecting coins is quieter than bowling.
Does it happen in this location ? Each person must answer that for themself.

Eye appeal plants one of them seeds. This gets an official "AMEN".

I'd like to add, when evaluating a coin, I take so many things into consideration.

Where did it come from ? What is my objective with it ? How well does it fit in with my collection ?
Will my heirs treasure like I do ?

Thanks for your thought provoking thread.

    Its always up to you.

    For me:

I prefer coins that are pre 1933 and circulated.

Buying from the US Mint since 1986 is for personal enjoyment, collection and pass along to the family.

    Eye appeal means alot!

I have to like the coin. duh. lol it has to be rare ( at least somewhat). the quality needs to be better than average. the value should increase over a short period of time. haha lol i wish.

I went through a phase in my collecting in which I valued true rarity over eye appeal. I owned a couple of coins that were "important" because they were R-6 or R-7 as a type. But they were not the nicest looking coins in the world.

While it can be fun to own a coin of which only 11 others exist - and it's important to consider adding such rarities to your collection when they become available - I found that it was more rewarding to focus much more on eye appealing coins and much less on rarity.

Eye appeal is extremely important to me. MidLifeCrisis makes a nice point about very rare issues that don't have good eye appeal. It is neat to own a rarity 6 or 7 coin, but even neater when it is nice to look at.

"eye appeal" is not a factor at all since it cannot be universally defined

what you are really saying is this: "In real estate, it's all about location. In coins, it's all about YOUR OPINION."

sad to say my 1964 sms dime lacks eye appeal is it's plaqued with either milk spotting or dip residue but the darn rarity far exceeds such eye appeal grief

it's not everyday i can own a coin of an estimated 25 to 40 mintage
everything in life is but merely on loan to us by our appreciation....lose your appreciation and see
