I recently sent Mark Goodman some of my favorite toned coins to be photographed,
and will be presenting them in a series of "Guess the Grade" threads. All comments
welcome.

Grade is revealed on page 2.

Gorgeous coin....MS62 because of the gouges.
  • Options
My first thought was a 63, but there are too many scratches on both faces for that grade. I'll give it a 62.
  • Options
I couldn't go higher than a 64 for the coin, although technically I think that it might be a 63.

Final answer is 64 with the eye-appeal and luster of a higher grade. Sticker worthy and very attractive!!!!
I think that your collecting strategy for classic commemoratives is evident based upon the coins that you've posted so far.

    Keep em' comin'!

Grade really doesn't matter with this coin but I see it in a 64 holder.

Even though a huge picture is great,
and the photography skills are without question,
    for grading purposes it exaggerates
    any marks,
    so consider posting smaller pictures.

    My guess is 64

Very nice color. IMO opinion there is not way that it should grade over MS62. I have a MS66 with virtualy no visible hits. That obverse is hit up pretty bad. I have a feeling that you are going to post a grade of MS64, though...and if so PCGS is wrong. There are hits on almost all focal and high ponits.

    Very nice looking example, though.image

You are right about the big pictures exaggerating marks. You can temporarily reduce the text/image
size in your browser, though. In Firefox, hit CTRL-minus a few times. CTRL-0 gets you back to "normal".
There is surely an analogous method for IE and other browsers.

Trying to decide between 63 and 64. I'll say 63. The toning hides the fact that the coin has some serious hits on both sides, but the underlying luster is quite nice and doesn't appear to be all hairlined.

MS 63 with 66 Eye Appeal. I could see it in a 64 holder. A very beautiful coin!

    You are absolutely correct,
in internet explorer there is a zoom
on the bottom right of the page,
that I never used, and went to 50% to look at the pic.

Now I am revising my guess from 64 to 63

    Actual grade: PCGS MS64

First let me say that as nice as the photos are of this coin, they really are a pale substitute for seeing
it in hand. There is much more color on the obverse fields, for one thing. Also, the luster is booming
and the colors appear to be floating above a backlight. I bought it from Brandon/Anaconda a few years
ago at Long Beach for "stupid money" and I've never regretted it for a second. This coin makes me
happy every time I look at it.

Regarding the grade, marks on the portraits are the rule with Gettysburgs, so I think PCGS didn't
downgrade as much as they might have for a different issue. Trust me, when you look at the coin,
the hits are not what you focus on. The coin has way too much flash to be a lower grade, in my
    opinion.

    Hi Brandon, wassup?

I got it reholdered shortly after I bought it, so don't remember for sure. It's not a coin that you want
in a scratched up slab... image
