New NGC edge-view holder and very small coins = What were they thinking?

Now, I actually like the new holder for larger coins, but I think it looks horrible with smaller coins. It takes up a good portion of the design elements.

Actually it's not nearly as bad as it looks. That photo is taken at an angle to show the toning. --Jerry

Well, it looks horrendous. So, a step lower than that would be really really really bad image

Those coins are tough to mount in any slab. I cracked mine out of an ANACS slab (the hole it was in was irregular due to the custom size. They look much better raw:

That may be true. On that small coin the tabs remind me of the left thumb of a right handed framing carpenter with poor eyesight. --Jerry

I personally like the PCGS edge view holders used for Husak's large cents, but they apparently don;t have those for coins of all sizes.

image I just wish that PCGS would introduce many more sizes of their much better edgeview holder. It is many times better than the the NGC edgeview IMO.

I have already passed on a couple of coins in which the new holder was part of the issue. If it is something I REALLY need, the holder does not matter, but for something that I am casually interested in, it can be a strike against the coin.

I was talking to a dealer about a small coin in a new style NGC holder yesterday, and he referred to it as a New Goshdarn* Crappy holder (of course, Goshdarn was said with a little stronger word choice that also began with a "G"). I do not think that he likes them either.

NGC blew it, IMO. They should have gone with the holder style that they use for multi-holders and Cal Gold with the clear gasket.

Oh, and before you tell me that it is not about the holder, and I should only look at the coin, the holder is like a frame and the coin a painting. If you put an unattractive frame around a beautiful picture, the whole thing looks crappy. If I have to break out the coin to enjoy it, which is sometimes my intention, then break the coin out of the holder and sell it to me raw (at the commensurate price).

I like it with big coins or edge lettered coins but on cents and dimes it looks strange and is distracting in photos.

  • Yeah NGC slabs already stunk for small coins and I cant believe they even made it worse. It makes you wonder. Its very distracting. The analogy of the frame and painting I thought was very good.

ooooo your right, i dont like that at all
  • The new holders are not conducive to imaging either. I've imaged a considerable amount of coins to date, but the new holders make it impossible to get a good shot of the coin without including the white prongs. Looks like it's back to the drawing board for NGC.

the answer to all these "Edgeview Holder" concerns is to go the multi-holder route.

I wouldn't give up on the concept quite yet. It looks like the claws are the same size and inner depth regardless of the size of the coin. That can be changed, and it could be a great improvement. Not perfect, but a big step in the right direction.

I agree, I hope both NGC and PCGS keep working on this to make the edge of the coins visible. Very important to see the edge! The PCGS edgeview with the clear tabs is the bomb!! I think NCS uses a clear edge view as well. A clear edge view that doesn't go as deep on the small coins would be great!!

Are those holders going to promote a toning pattern on the coins? If they do, I don't expect it will be attractive at all.
    When in doubt, don't.

Wow. I was gonna give NGC a try with some Buff uncirc sets and a few 08w AGE uncirc sets. Not unless I can specifiy an earlier holder!

  • It makes you wonder how a design like this actually gets from the idea stage to actual implementation. Who is running the show over there? Nobody brought up these comments before they rolled out this thing? I would like to see a really small coin in one of these slabs. That would really be interesting.

I've been asking this about truck engineers for years. The only conclusion I've been able to reach is that they obviously do not work on their own vehicles.

Granted, I re-entered the hobby within the past few years, but why hasn't someone REALLY solved this issue of being able to view coin edges in holders before now?

At the Money Show in Houston yesterday, I saw a proof 3c Nickel that had already rotated about 45 degrees in the new holder. They apparently don't hold them very well, either.

Unfair criticism. Have you ever seen a slab design where a coin, especially with a smooth edge, can't rotate?

I don't like the new NGC holders, even on large coins. If I had to have the coin, in their new holder, I would cross it to PCGS ASAP.
