Nikon D40 (not the D40x). These were shot on aperture priority, color was set using a gray card. I'm using ambient daylight light only. Lens is the Nikkor 18 - 55 mm lens, manual focus - (not using anything macro). The coin is in an airtite with the top half removed. The airtite is secured to a box (reasonably small but sturdy) with two rubber bands. The camera lens is about 5-6 inches from the coin. This whole thing plays out on the dining room table with the coin facing the picture window. I always try to shoot using the timer - then get out of the way.

I have a D40 for my personal use, but don't use it for coin pictures. I definately like it as an entry level DSLR. The only issue I've really had is that it does not have the autofocus motors in the body. This was done to save money. However, this also means that if you want to us the autofocus, there are only about 15 Nikkor lens' that are compatible. You can still use other Nikkor lens', but you lose the autofocus ability if it doesn't have the motors built-in. Of course, a good photographer doesn't use autofocus But for the amateurs, it sure makes things easier...
I have been using the D40x but just ordered the new D90 that is supposed to be delivered today :-) I am anxious to see how much better the pics are with the new CMOS chip ... plus it shoots up to 5 minutes of high def video. I'm putting the complete D40x setup on eBay today. However, if you are looking for a slightly used mint package I'll make you one heckuva sweet deal.

Flectcher,
I picked up the D90 2 weeks ago and I love it! Lots of very good reviews out there and don't be concerned with the few minor complaints voiced by some. Once you get familiar with the features and proper use of the D90, the complaints vanish. The 18-105mm kit lens is an excellent all-purpose lens.
PM sent with more non-coin related details.

I was wondering what kind of images you could get with the d 40 or d60 with that 18-55 mm lens w/o a macro lens.
