Question Re Damaged Platinum Eagle (Or Any Other) Returns

Just a general question regarding platinum eagles returned and marked as damaged (and I'm talking real damage...not the MS-68/69 vs it doesn't grade MS 70 variety). To the best of our knowledge does the Mint actually look at these coins under magnification before sending them back out to another customer...or do they scrap them without a review?
I ask because this could also serve to reduce the final 2008 mintage numbers...attrition due to damage...as I'm sure quite a few perfectionists may have returned pretty decent coins (all things being equal) as "damaged."

I personally returned a few that had actually come out of their holders during shipment. I got the feeling that I had received returned coins that had been taken out of their holders then put back in...returned to the mint...then sent to me from the mint.
<< <i>I also feel as if my platinum coins could have been returns. I just got (2) 1/4 unc plats, (1) plat 4 coin unc set and (1) 1/2 plat unc. Oh yeah, great deal (2) plat proof 1/10 for $299 shipped. >>
Do they look less than pristine?
I sure hope they don't send them out again.
Short of actually getting hit by a screwdriver, I suspect mostly all the 2008 PM coins might ultimately be worth more than their weight in gold (or platinum) due to rarity...
But bigger picture...does anyone know if the Mint in previous years has actually broken out their final numbers by total minted minus damaged coins returned? I would say that if ANY coins are rejected due to severe damage that they'd have to be accounted for in this manner...or else the final "mintage" numbers are not truly accurate as some percent of the total number were actually returned and ultimately destroyed. This would be true of any series that has a mintage "limit" of let's say 15,000 or 30,000...as some percent of them would undoubtedly be returned for any number of legitimate damage claims...such as scratches caused by floating around loose in their holders (as noted above).
These were from 4 seperate orders of mine and friends spread over 4 months.
IMO only 20% were worth keeping.
I'm not talking about some minor scuff or break in frost............many of these were seriously damaged.
Most common was reverse rim damage between 10 and 2 o'clock.
<< <i>I had an opportunity to examine 30 of the 4 coin sets of 2008-W Unc plus 10+ of 1 oz. and 1/2 oz. singles.

CORRECT! However I was horribly lambasted on this board for making the exact same observation and then sending 80% back!
LOL.

So then...are we saying that when a coin is returned and flagged as "damaged," that the geniuses at the Distribution Center simply rebox it and ship it back out...or are some especially egregious examples actually likely pulled and destroyed?
