I hit the show from 1:00 to 4:00. Ran into Oreville and some of his friends. Checked out Seaeagle's stuff, Scarsdale, Ed Doran, JBC, Hendleson, and several others. There wasn't a whole lot in the way of choice or gem 19th century type, not that I expected anything really. One dealer had an attractive NGC PF66 trade dollar that was out of my current range. In the NM, No Stars, and No drapery seated material, the pickings were very slim. I was sort of shocked at the lack of MS64-65 generic gold, even Saints. I think there was one MS66 saint, one MS65, and one MS64 saint sitting out among the dozens of cases. That was odd. Liberty and Indian gold was only available in AU-63 as a rule, and not that much in 63 material for a show of this size. In MS65 generic gold I spotted a single MS65 $5 Lib and a couple of MS65 $2-1/2 Libs, that was it. Not a single MS64 or MS65 $20 Lib seemed to be present. There seemed to be plenty of circulated Liberty and Indian gold if one was interested, and bullion products as well. I don't recall seeing much in 90% silver coin and silver bars. Traffic was described as brisk to heavy from the people I talked to. I saw some coins being sold. But after consecutive weeks at CoinFest and Baltimore, maybe there wasn't that much fresh material here. For those hoping to snag some good coins cheap, this didn't seem to be that day. Each year it seems like the stamp and paper currency guys take over a little bit more of the tables. There were a few empty ones as well.
I did see one nice generic Saint I should have bought, and will call the guy later before it possibly sells on Saturday. For those monitoring CAC, there was very little of those at the show, esp. in gold and type. The floor was very wide open this time which was good. I passed on the Nathan's fast food and brough my own tuna sandwhich from home. Parking at $4 in the lot across the street is not too bad. I was hoping to hit the superb diner across the street but did not get to that. Was hoping to see some forum "lurkers" at the show but not today.
Traditional the Thanksgiving weekshow is one that I especially look forward to...there always seems to be a more festive relaxed aura at the show.... The Westchester County Center is a hard venue but on this weekend we give thanks that the show is held upstairs....however something seems to have taken over the Sunday so the show normally a 3 dayer is just a short 2 days....
this throws many dealers into a hmmmmm I dont want to set up for 2 day mode.... so missing this weekend New World, Dart, Don Blau, to name a few... turly a shame as the venue could easily hold more dealers and the lack of 25% of the normal dealers turns what could be a rather nice show into a smaller less must show up for show.....
So how did we do... well noon and the doors opened...it was nice to see a rather nice crowd come in....especially since the early morning dealer to dealer activitiy seemed slugish...we did rather well early since we cleaned out a lot of odds and ends and was moving lots of deals at some great prices to dealers who welcomed some fresh material at rather bargain basement prices......
heck it is black Friday...we want to do our part...
so we sold lots of little things... everything from wheaties, loops, bags of silver, to better gold pices, type etc..... rather a fair day and we did move a lot of candy as well...
So Sat is another day...hopefully a little more rested we return to knock emm dead...hope to see ya there!
Jon PS: Our retail store is located just a mile or so down the road, so after the show stop in and say hello to the guys in the shop!
The show was much busier than usual for Friday at White Plains...a steady stream of folks kept me quite busy. I was so busy that I don't even remember seeing Roadrunner ...sorry 'bout that...
Oreville did stop by and I purchased a few coins from him and then he and one of his buddies bought a few from me...a true example of "moving money"...
I am still seeing the continued trend of collectors STILL looking for coins but their price threshold is lower than say a year ago... not so much a resistance to prices but less "allowance" available so they are lowering their grade "expectation" and going for easier to afford material.
I sold some type coins, some Buffs, mercs, washies and Morgans to collectors and a smattering of other stuff to a few dealers who came by.
Oh...there was a pleasant surprise visit from Mr Eureka ...always a pleasure to see Andy... but he was solo and did not have Aki to lead him around, so he did look a bit "lost"... (just kidding, Andy).
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free
Please forgive me.... the Aki report is that he made out like a bandit over the Thanksgiving feast.... I have yet to fix Aki up with Maggie, but one of these days .......
Interesting, I did see the show start with a flurry and then it seemed to die down a bit quickly.
Indeed, I had sold a few of my coins to SeaEagle coins and then I noticed he had a lovely old AU 1916 Barber dime attached to one of those old ANACS photo cards with the coin in a sealed pouch!
Honestly, I think I am morphing from a coin collector to a plastic/pouch collector! LOL.
