Newest pickup - Guess the grade of this Jefferson

Okay, I don't normally do this and ask for the guess, but I went by the coin shop I rarely go into since their prices tend to be somewhat high. The dealer had three 39-D's DDO#1s in MS60 - MS63ish, all anotated as DDOs for $150 each. He also had two 39D's in "BU" of which the one I bought. NOTE: All the white stuff in the picture is pieces of the 2X2. This one was better than all the rest. Now, it's time to guess... what does it grade?

Oh, and also, it was a DDO#1 which wasn't annotated. This seller had 4 in the case... and now has three left.

    This coin looks very clean.
    I like this one a lot.
    66 from what I can see.
    Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

    Good question... never been asked that before, that way... um... probably middle of the road, about a 5.

    I think for a raw coin, it's definitely a coin that should be in plastic. The only question is... would it go MS66 or higher. It doesn't have the chatter of MS65s or even most MS66s. The cheek is clean. Actually, I've seen MS67s with more chatter.

    The worst thing about it is it will be at least a year before it gets graded. I don't have enough time left to wait to get it back before I leave for the Middle East.

    So, in my humble opinion, it will end up in a MS66 holder. Too bad it probably won't be living in a PCGS holder since they don't designate the variety.

    FullStepJeffs, I've seen plenty of Jefferson's in PCGS 67 holders that weren't as nice as this coin. I'd say a strong 66 with a great shot at a 67. Congratulation's on a nice find!!! image Shag

    It's rare to see those early pre-war dates with blast white luster. I've only seen one and should have bought it. It's also rare to see this date with a full strike and without the slight rotated die. Your coin looks nice but I wouldn't grade it higher than a MS65 due to the middle of the road luster and a few marks around the ear and cheek. Years ago I sold a nice one but it ended up in a AU58 holder and we were both shocked with that result. I just think that a coin needs to have some nice luster to grade high so when that day comes to have it graded, it might only grade a MS64.
    The 1939-D is a tough date to locate with 2-3 decent qualities. It's not an easy coin to find in high grade.
