A 20 Year Dream Comes True.....Bust and Peace

I think back to being eight years old. Pulling wheat cents from my grandfather's penny jar, and pushing dateless buffalo nickels into a whitman folder. I remember the local coin shop in the mall near the house and gazing for hours at indian cents and walking liberty halves. I remember my mom showing me the proof set from the year I was born and thinking how neat Susan B Anthony Dollars were. In fact, I remember my mom showing me the proof set from when SHE was born (my grandpa gave it to her as a birthday present sometime in the early 80's in a capitol plastics holder) and thinking that it was as shame Benjamin Franklin wasn't on the half dollar anymore, or even that it was a shame you never SAW half dollars anymore. I remember the well worn 1880 IHC my grandma gave me for christmas on my tenth birthday. "It was made 100 years ago this year," she told me, and I remember how I smiled. My prized possession was a stack of Ike dollars that I had somehow accumulated as my grandpa sometimes received them as payment in his fishing shop.

What I remember more than anything though, was countless hours spent gazing through the redbook, and how two particular coins always stuck out to me as beautiful, rare, and probably unobtainable. Peace Dollars and Bust Dollars. They were SOOOO beautiful, and I had never even laid my EYES on one in real life. Well, 20 years later I am an avid Peace Dollar guy, and part of the allure to me is how strongly I felt about that picture of the 1921 Peace Dollar in the redbook so many years ago.

I never did get a bust dollar though. I got to the point in my life where I could afford one, but it just never happened. Either I had the free cash and there wasn't a decent one to be found, or I had the cash and spent it on cars, guns, bills, savings, etc etc etc etc. Still though, for years and years and years that old picture of the bust dollar from the redbook would visit me every now and again.

Well, I got a different type of visit at the mailbox this morning. 20 Years Later - I finally own one. FINALLY. And I love it! (Still have an iteration of that first peace dollar I fell in love with too)

I present to you the two coins I thought I would never own that hopefully are just a start to a much longer numismatic experience:
