What the heck is on this 1867 Shield Nickel?

There is a coating of reddish-brown(I would say more red than brown) crap on it. What to do with it? Can it be saved? Thanks in advance!

I dunno, but I've got a few old Mexican centavos like that.

More likely rust developed on that piece... A dug up coin were the soil from the excavation, had high levels of iron deposits... (Corrosion). Not much could be done with this nickel.

I don't know the chemical composition, but that type of surface usually results from the coin having spend a long time in the ground.

Looks like this might be a dipping/cleaning experimental coin. image
But then again, I have never dipped or cleaned a coin, so I have no idea where to begin!

Looks like gunk from an old cardboard/paper album to me. Likely saw some humidity.

Corrosion. It's likely the coin was buried. It's beyond help.

If you try to clean it you will probably end up with a shiny slug. Best to leave it as is.

I"ve seen a number of shield nickels like that. It's corrosion and it's hopeless.

    That is a GREAT idea!

It'll make someone's day for sure to find that in circulation!

Do the potatoe trick. It will not hurt the coin and it should help the look, if in fact it has been in the ground.

Shield Nickels seem to corrode rather easily. This one has had it.

Yup, good ole fashioned corrosion from the ground or high humidity.
