OK, looking at the pics I don't see a MS66 anywhere. What am I missing?
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

<< <i>As long as individuals 'must have' slabbed coins.... and as long as 'individuals' are not as good as the TPG's at grading, we will have stories such as this. Opinions are just that..... even 'informed' opinions..... Those who believe they are better than the TPG's need to apply for a job there.... otherwise, accept what you are given. Or - spend money on resubmissions.... your money, your choice. Cheers, RickO >>

that first coin has a super clean cheek. sure it shows some marks
but it appears nicer then a lot of other coins i see called a 64..

i cannot imagine it getting a 63 if i read the thread correctly. 63 is
simply wrong. I totally disagree with PCGS. they blew it based on
the one pic of the obv.

but of course each series is graded differently i suppose. maybe
not a 66 but it sure seems worthy of a lock 64 and shot 65 based on the luster
    and overall good condition.

    Don't see a 66, jmo

I see no problem with this coin, unless the image is hiding something. >>

Just my opinion of what happened with this coin...

I'm not surprised that PCGS BBed it for questional color. I have an idea on what may have been done to the coin.

if they can call this mess an MS-66, than they could have at least given you one MS65!

I quit dabbling in Peace dollars due to the (perceived?) inconsistencies in grading. IMO, strike seems to figure into it more heavily than on Morgans... sometimes. His relatively mark free 24 was prob. dumped on because it is such a mushy strike (and not part. attractive). If I cannot reasonably second-guess their graders in a series then I do not send in those coins. Simple as that.

    I agree.

With Peace dollars it's a total guessing game for me (and it seems most others).

It's very similar to the most difficult series of Canadian coins to grade - the KGV Canadian 5 Cents (1922-1936). I'm sure if you collect these, you will agree with me.

You ever see a 63 that nice before? I have not. Sure maybe not a
GEM due to strike but an easy 64.

It is very difficult to argue that coin, obv, deserves a 63. Very difficult.

of course this is all just my opinion. I wish I could buy coins like that
graded so conservative. It just does not happen with gold half eagles.
63 gets you a doggy. 65-66 is where you get something equivalent
looking to that coin relatively speaking.

The only thing I can see on that '23 Peace is a soft strike. I guess they took off 2 points for the strike! image Clean surfaces on that one!

I never crack 'em. Send them in the PCGS holder when trying to upgrade. I only crack the competition.

Please refer to my "how many points does ownership add" thread. image I'm going to go take pics of my best raw Peace dollar and post it here for comparison purposes. I've always thought it might get a 65 but never submitted to PCGS before.
