Can dipping remove the mirror on a dmpl or pl coin? If so can you send in dmpl or pl for grading and not worry about it being bb? If not how can you tell?

No, dipping only removes the oxidation.

Depends on what you dip it in. If it is acid based it will remove a thin layer of the coin, if you leave it dipped for enough time you will not have much of the coin left.
Acetone just removes stuff like paint, PVC and fingernail polish.

Dipping in any substance that directly affects the coin's surface does just that. The mirrors on a DMPL Morgan are very fragile. There are people who "conserve" using spot treatments. I suppose, under some fast circumstances, with a very weak dip, the mirrors might not be damaged. I sure would not try it. In fact, a DMPL Morgan is the absolute last coin I would consider dipping.
And yes, acetone is different than those others. Whether you want to call it a dip is a matter of semantics.
I am not planning to dip anything. I just want to make sure when I send my dmpl and pl Morgans in for grading, that they will come back with a grade. I am working on learning how to post these lovely coins I bought for less than $30 because the seller used a scan and nobody bid on them. You can't really capture a mirrored surface on a scan although they do look different it is not a good way to sell them. But who am I to complain

I know what you mean, this was also got on the cheap based on a scan photo.
Although not a dmpl, this was also bought on the cheap because of having a bad scan. (my avatar pic)

Those are certainly lovely coins, sometimes it's great to take the chance isn't it? If I can't figure out how to get these imaged maybe I will send them to Lee or Stefanie to photograph for me
<< <i>It's more fun to learn on your own, my pics aren't the greatest, but I'm going to buy a copy stand and some lamps and see how much better that works. >>
That first morgan has incredible frost. I'm curious if it was a crappy scan, was the coin raw or listed as dmpl on ebay?

It was raw and not listed as dmpl, just scanned right in the 2x2.

Are you kidding? Those are some spectacular photos!! What kind of camera do you use?

Thanks, but there are much better ones on here! I would like to be able to capture toning better, since that is what I collect. Currently I use a Samsung A7.
For example, the untoned coin is much more representative than the toned one.

Sure it is, just dip the coin.

Is this acetone the same thing you can get at a Home Depot paint department?

Yeap. and it comes in a metal can, so you know it reacts zero with metal. Other products., like MS70, contain sulfuric acid and eat away metal.
