I like them but you can buy other lights with the same K rating for much cheaper and they go in ay light so you can have more flexibility

I like them for taking photo's of copper. That's about it. I like a regular old 100W incan. to view my own coins; just like when auction lot or coin show viewing.

  • i bought 2 of them used off ebay about a year ago for $29 shipped when you recommended them in a thread on lighting. they`re great on copper and pretty good on platinum tooimage

I use them on modern and very shiny coins. Getting a good white balance is a little tough since they have a spike in the green region.

I am preferential to Ott Lites as well.

Recently, though, I noticed that my camera is having trouble capturing the white balance. This was not the case when the Ott's were new. I've had them for about 18 months now. Does anyone know if the bulbs are losing their "ottiness" and perhaps the reason for the white balance troubles is that I need to buy new bulbs?

I've had mine about as long. I never had a WB problem, but did have one of the bulbs go out.

I think everyone should have one. Not only are they good to read and view coins under, but also good in photography. While, like others, they are not my first choice for most coins, they are great to have around.

So is a daylight fixture (SoLux) better than Ott? Does the Ott lamp have different bulbs that are more similar to daylight than other bulbs?

Since the link was to Solux, I am sure it was impartial and that they think the solux are better image

Anytime I see something comparing the competition, I take it with a huge grain of salt.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Linens and Things is going out of business and starting to cut all of its prices soon. Since its only a few doors down from where I work I think I'll check and see if they carry OTT lights. Maybe I can get a steal on them if I time it right.
