  looks like someone used a needle or pin and just scratched the middle band in

  Definitely "cut". Look at how sharp the break is on the middle band. Then look at the other pictures that show a more rounded break. Looks like someone took an razor blade on cut in the middle band.

  Heck, he did not even line up the cut in the middle of the center bands!
  
  Otherwise these could be the first ever off-center center split bands in the history of the mercury dime set!
