Regrade With Comment

Has anyone submitted coins with this service?

Do you think the graders are tougher on the grades knowing they have to comment?

I ask this because it's my understanding that when coins are submitted for "just" regrade the graders are sent the coin(s) out of the slab and don't know that it's a regrade. Obviously, if they have to comment they know it's a regrade...

  • I think it's an interesting question. I definitely think it forces them to give the coin more than a cursory glance.

I've submitted under this service, which BTW is no longer available.

1972 Type 2 MS64 - "Large hits on IKEs head, especially in neck area prevent a higher grade."

1977 MS66 - "No major surface marks but light film on obverse obscures luster and film/fingerprints on reverse."

"Obviously, if they have to comment they know it's a regrade... "

and in the above case ("prevents a higher grade"), they probably know what it currently graded at.

I think that all grading should come back with at least one comment on what kept it from hitting the next grade.

I don't because the one thing PCGS does not want is to start a grading argument with each and every coin.

Grading is an acquired skill and each grader is checked to insure that they meet or exceed PCGS's grading standard. As with the coins posted on these forums, different folks will grade as much as a three point spread based upon certain "perceived" criteria.

As a submitter, the trust is supposed to be given to the folks that make a living at grading and each submission should not be a lesson in how to grade.

The option is still on the submission form -- $20 per coin...

Why not? As you have stated, the graders are world class experts at grading, and most submitters are not.

I'm not sure why not but it is no longer available.

An email was sent out but I notice the option is still up on PCGS's fee's page.

As for a lesson in grading, they're graders and not teachers.
