Are NGC slabs better for 1936-42 Proofs?

In my search to acquire a full 1937 Proof Set I am have noticed that many coins in PCGS holders are stained and toned, while thier NGC counterparts are nice and fresh. Would this be an indication that NGC holders are better to preserve the coin and protect them against toning and other enviormental factors?

Stick with coins in PCGS holders, but be discerning about even those. Although I can speak with certainty about 36-42 cents, I have collected the other denominations as well and the same applies. Of course you can find the occasional nice coin in an NGC holder, but that is not the rule with proofs of this era. Of the denominations, I have seen more NGC buffs and dimes closer to the correct grade than the others. The biggest difference being with cents. YMMV.

there are great coins in both pcgs and ngc holders and there are horrible coins in both pcgs and ngc holders

  • None of us have really answered the question. The question is -- Does NGC preserve coins better than PCGS? The answer to this question is -- I don't know.
We are not asking about the grading merits of the grading services. Halfhunter is just asking about which slabs preserve coins better.

Which slab preserves coins better? To be quite honest, I think they're about the same, though I base this on no scientific research.
