I have zero self control. After work I stoped by our local comic book shop. I havn't been into one of these for many years. I brought back alot of old memories. The shop doesn't carry alot of the high end comics. Here is what I picked up. - - - - -
i like the thing #1, i always wanted the writers to focus on the Thing's machismo & un-canny ability to bag any babe he wanted. but it never happened, as he is shut down w/ the ladies.
I had a few thousand comics stored in my parents basement. Including about 500 really nice comics from the 60s my father gave to me. These included really early issues of Amazing Spiderman, X-Men, etc. Some single digit issues in very nice condition. On top of this I had a solid selection of comics from when I used to setup at conventions to sell. I don't even want to think how much these were all worth. They were all stacked up on a table in the corner of the basement. Well my parents went to Florida, and when they came back there was a foot of water in the basement. They called me and told me I wasn't going to be happy, my youngest sister had been over a couple months earlier and my parents gave her the table these were all setup off the ground on. They stacked them in the comic boxes they were in on the ground, somehow with the most expensive ones managing to be sat down on the ground first. Well they soaked the water up like a sponge and were almost all destroyed. No flood insurance and the home owners insurance didn't cover them.
They didn't really know what they were worth and it was my fault for not making sure they were aware of this and that they were to NEVER be stacked straight on the concrete basement floor.
Here's a few I scanned a while ago. I have approx. 10 to 15 thousand comics I picked up when I bought out a sports card store of all their older inventory. When all the cards were paid for, he gave me all the comics!! Got stuff from the mid 1940's up thru early 90's. (the really old stuff is lower grade). Sent in a few to CGC but prices didn't seem to reflect what I figured they would get. That was a few years ago, maybe I should try them out again.? (ps: Jason, I think I have about 20-30 copies of The New Warriors #1 in with all the other stuff)
Rube- I've got a bunch I can scan when I get home from wrk. ...Sgt. Rock, Unknown Soldier, Nam, Fightin' Marines, Sgt. Fury and probably some others too.
Anyone ever draw any comic books? I have made a few. For a while I did an underground monthly that I would print on a copy machine. The pages were sized 5.5 by 7 because the largest page size on a (normal) copy machine is 11 by 14. One series I did was while I was working as a fast food manager at a chicken franchise. The star "Super Cook" fought mutant chickens that blew up chicken restaurants. In the final issue it was discovered the chickens, which were more given a more hero treatment then a villain, were being manipulated by a hamburger restaurant owner. Another comic I did was "Joe the Lamp" who died in the first pages. It basically teamed appliances against electronics (old world vs new world views) while the appliances fought (for Joe) to obtain equal rights to the humans time, and usually got beat up. It ended with a dishwasher flooding everyone and basically everyone died.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
I'm curious, what goes into comic book grading? Is a "10" the highest grade? What is the condition difference between two grading points (i.e. 9.2 and 9.4)? How much can a comic book be restored and still receive a high grade? Add whatever other info you may like.
The comic grading scale is a bit different. Mostly whole numbers and half numbers until after 9.0. 9.2 is NM-, 9.4 is NM, 9.6 is NM+, 9.8 is NM/MT, 9.9 is mint, and 10 is Gem mint. There is also an oddball 1.8 Good-.
Restored books receive a qualified grade such as "Apparent 9.0" etc. I thinjk they can get any apparent grade.
Or a smart person could have just done this:

I bought a few Comics a few years back to frame and hang on the wall cause I thought the artwork on the front look cool. I still havent framed them yet, does anyone know of a good frame to use to hang these on the wall with ?? I also found a box full from the 70's up in the attic the other day, Hulk,spidey,fantastic four, etc etc. they are still up there in the box.
I scanned a few in that I bought, I still like looking through them and reading them, the artwork is fantastic. I have some X-men somewhere too. I would like to find some frames and put these on my kids wall in thier room.
The covers on the Kubert run of Sgt. Rock are some of the greatest pull you in covers of all time. Sgt Rock and Easy Co. were always just 1 step away from either being discovered, killed, tortured, beaten, saved, or victorious.

Here ya go Rube. I got this one just because it actually referenced the cigar on the cover. Sgt. Fury was almost always smoking one, but they rarely referenced it.

AF 15 seems to come up for sale alot. You won't find it "cheap" though. Check comiclink.com foir their auction starting at the end of the week. There are a couple graded ones in it I believe.

I think that would be neat too. I have a friend who used to hang his new comics on the wall in the bags they came from the comic shop in - the display rotated every month and looked very cool. I wouldn't mind doing something like that, but with better framing.
