Question - Presidential Dollars Weak Edge Lettering?

GRANDAMGRANDAM Posts: 8,785 ✭✭✭✭✭
What does it take to be classdified as Weak Edge lettering by PCGS?

I have been looking thru some rolls and have found some Andrew Jackson with lettering about half as deep as normal.

Thanks for any help,,,, GrandAm image

Weak edge lettering needs to be weak enough so that part of the letters are missing, just not the entire letter.

This one is close to a partial.

    Come on Sumnom!

I'm not afraid to show my stupidity!

Actually, I think this particular subject NEEDS some discussion since PCGS has never revealed the actual definition for "Weak Edge Lettering" and/or "Partial Edge Lettering" other than a Weak Edge Lettered coin appears to be a Missing Edge Lettered coin until you examine it closely.

.........it just reinforces the blunder of the edge lettering idea for the buck coins.image

    I agree with Lee.

The degree of weak edge lettering to get PCGS to holder the coins has changed from the boom of the Jefferson weak edge lettering errors.
I have seen some VERY light edge lettering and some with just a few letters are weak. The range is wide on the weak edge lettering.

As for partial edge. Thats fairly easy...At least one letter needs to be GONE. If a part of the T is still there, its only a weak.

I don't know of ANY PCGS graded "Edge" errors since James Monroe.
Does anyone have information to the contrary?

This would be good thread for PCGS to jump in with some kind of "official" definition.

Weak edges are so common. I found some here in Michigan from Washington D rolls and I have about 50 of them. Many others on this board are also finding them as I'm sure many have found them and just put them back into circulation. It was a disgrace in the first place for any of the top grading services to be grading them, I mean so what is next we are going to start submitting every coin demonination for every year which would be thousands of possible combinations that were struck weak on the obverse or reverse? Anyone buying a Jefferson or any presidential weak edge for an investment and not collectibility then good luck. Partial edges or Schuler edge jamming errors are extremely rare and they deserve to be in a holder and need to be in a holder to make sure they are legit.

Many folks think they have weak edge lettering but in fact do not. To qualify the lettering needs to so weak that parts of the letters are missing. I recall reading from PCGS that Weak Edge lettered coins appear to be "missing edge lettering" coins in hand but in fact do have the edge lettering. The entire reason behind the Weak and Partial Edge Lettering coins being graded by the TPG's is directly related to the initial "missing Edge Lettered" coins when these were released . It has simply snowballed since then as more and more folks actually look at what they have.

As for weakly struck obverse and reverse coins, those ARE collected yet are attributed as errors. Most commonly as die trial strikes or some even as strike through grease.

Here's a neat piece of information, even though the Weak Edge Lettering and Partial Edge Lettering coins do not have "Error Coin Numbers" (i.e. an E infront of the regular coin number) they are considered "error's" by PCGS and are graded under Mint Error submissions. Evidently this is done so that the coins can be entered into the "Complete Variety Registry Sets".

I don;t necessarily agree with this policy but then I don;t make the rules.

I have found some great spacing errors on the Pres Dollars.
Right now, no slabbing by PCGS on these.
I've seen overlapping mint mark & 'E' in E Pluiribus.
This is really a nice error, but it is not a designated variety either.
