must be dropping to zero at more than 60% over spot.
Anyone know if e-bay sale prices are dropping yet or still selling for over $600?

It looks like some people are buying, even Dolley is getting a hundred sales a week. I bet some buyers have no clue what the price of gold actually is.

I just sold a few on eBay at less than $600.

Sold an Abigail Adams proof @ $550 (buyer got 30% cashback).

Also recent sold a Louisa Adams Unc and Proof and a Elizabeth Monroe Unc and Proof for I think $550/coin (took a little loss on each from Mint prices) all to the same buyer.

I've got Dolley Madison in proof and unc for sale and an Abigail Adams in unc for sale, but with current spot prices I doubt anyone will buy them, even with MSN cashback.

I'm just hoping that the Mint lowers the price of the Van Buren Liberty. If they maintain current price levels it's getting close to double spot price!!! That next Liberty is a sweet coin though!!!!

I have sold a few, and have some for sale now that I started with .99 and no reserve. What's the big whoop?

I sold a PR69 Jeff Spouse for $550 this week on Ebay. The buyer used the 25% cashback rebate and a 10% coupon, which enabled him to buy it for under spot. I think the overriding factor right now is the difficulty in finding any physical gold for sale. None of the B&Ms in my area (San Diego north county) have any currently, and when they do, it is snapped up at hefty premiums.

Just curious, does ebay inform sellers that buyers are using the Live search cash back?image

If you go to the "View Order Details" page on the item, you can see the cashback they got.

Nope. The buyer called me because he was having trouble with Paypal on the cashback end. It was then he told me that he was also using some type of coupon and gift cert, which is what caused the cashback logo to disappear on his final payment page. He and Paypal got it straightened out.
  • As the sales of the first spouse series are not hitting anywhere near the limits of 20, 000 proof and Unc, will the mint stop sales after a certain point and melt the remaining coins, or do they just leave them up for sale until they are all sold? Also, will they limit the amount of coins made for the upcoming spouse series based on past sales?

Not sure what they'll do regarding the mintages of the 2009 coins and beyond.

I did read somewhere, probably here on these threads that each coin will be offered for one year or until sold out, whichever comes first. If that is true, the Dolley Madisons should be taken off the market at the end of November (a year since their release) when the Van Buren Liberty's are listed for sale. Monroe's should taken down in early 2009, Adams in May 09 and Jackson in Aug 09. We'll see if that's the case at the end of the month though when the Mint either pulls the Madisons or leaves them up for over the year...

At the right price the spouse is an excellent bullion play, especially with the cashback savings.

I do believe way, way down the road our grandkids will be paying high dollar for the early spouse, not only because of the low mintage but the fact that a lot of them will have been melted. Long, long term investment is a sure thing. If you're a young collector, this is a good series to get into. Bullion play for me, I won't live long enough to see it, and my kids could care less about collecting. They like spending.

I was wondering about this recently myself. Let's take a look at the most recent Mint stats RE: the First Spouse coins.

    ****************************
    2007
Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson's Liberty (both Proof and UNCs)...sold out 20,000 each

Dolly Madison UNC...........12,706.......up 26 last two weeks
Dolly Madison Proof..........18,312.......up 21 last two weeks

    2008
Elizabeth Monroe UNC......4,219.........up 11 last two weeks
Elizabeth Monroe Proof....7,289.........up 11 last two weeks

Louisa Adams UNC...........2,728.........up 17 last two weeks
Louisa Adams Proof..........4,779.........up 26 last two weeks

    Jackson's Liberty UNC.......2,611.........up 27 last two weeks
    Jackson's Liberty Proof......4,535........up 32 last two weeks
    *****************************

Obviously, there was a huge initial interest in these coins that caused a 40,000 coin sellout of the first three.
Taking a look at the recent numbers, perhaps the Mint should set new limits at 5,000 for each option.

Or then again, they could just price it within reason of other physical gold. image
