Another ebay bidder rant.....what kind on non-paying deadbeats have you dealth with?

I list an item on ebay at $9.99 with No Reserve. Sells for $450, which is right for the coin. Buyer has 120 positive feedback (100%) and history of buying similar coins in this price range. About a week after the auction, says he's in Europe and will pay when he gets back. A week later sends another email saying he will take care of paying. In the meantime, he's continuing to bid and win on ebay and continuing to pay other sellers. Another 10 days go by, a few emails, and no reponse. Its been 3+ weeks, so I open a NPB on ebay. Wait another 10 days, send a few more emails, no response. Meantime, he's still bidding, buying and paying other sellers. During this 5 week period, he's gotten another 25-30 ebay + feedback responses. I would have to call this type ebyer the dreaded cold-feet deadbeat. Just decides to pretend like the auction never happened. What kind of non-paying deadbeats have you experienced???

Here's the coin in question, in case you want to see for yourself if this is a coin you'd pass on.

In the last month, I've sold about 40 items.

Most buyers paid within 24 hours. Several paid within 1 hour.

Oddly, paying too quickly can cause problems also. One buyer bought two items and paid in less than an hour, before I had a chance to send an invoice. That was nice, but I would have combined shipping charges on the invoice I didn't have a chance to send, so I had to figure out how to issue a partial refund after the fact.

One buyer took a week to get back to me, then said he wouldn't be able to pay until his next paycheck arrived in another 10 days and asked if that would be ok. (I said it would be ok, and he did pay, eventually).

Two other buyers I had to chase and threaten NPB filings after I heard absolutely nothing for more than 2 weeks. They also both paid, eventually. Ironically, those two people bought the only two items that sold for significantly less than I thought they should have. In other words, I was ticked that the item was selling too cheap, and then extra ticked that the buyers didn't pay. If I was in a different mood, I could very easily have filed the NPB exactly 1 week after the auction, as long as the buyers were giving me such a good excuse to get out of the sales. I did honor the sales, but I sure thought about not.

From what you're saying it sounds like buyers remorse. I'd file the NPB alert, get your fees back, block him and move on. It happens from time to time. Not much you can do about it.

Bummer. I've been pretty lucky in this regard. The only time it's happened lately
was when a guy with about a 10 feedback bid and won a VHS tape for 1 cent and then
never paid or responded. I think he actually saved me money, but PayPal may have
    been pi$$ed.

Anyway, in your case, I would have contacted the underbidder after about 7 days with
a heads up that the coin might still be available and to gauge interest. Then after filing
the NPB and no response, would have sold it to him/her, if there was indeed interest.

    BTW, nice coin!

    Man you are soooo patient!

I do not email any bidder about payment. I figure they know what they owe, and they know they should pay.
It is up to the bidder to email me if he has a problem paying. It could be the lamest excuse and I will give them leeway.

If no email and after 8 days of silence, I simply file a NPB report and block him right away so he doesn't retaliate with other listings of mine.
This gives the bidder another week to pay.
Most of the time they pay right after the NPB is reported and the most likely response, if there is one, is "Sorry I forgot". yeah right

If he pays, no problem, but he remains blocked from further dealings.
My reason is there are many good bidders on ebay so I don't need to deal with someone I had to file a NBP on.

If he doesn't pay, I get my FVF back and relist the item. Simple as that.

As a bonus, I don't loose any sleep whatsoever with this method, and I don't waste time chasing after deadbeat money. image

As a buyer, if I don't get some invoice or acknowledgment of the pending transaction within 2 days of
winning an auction, I will definitely rate the seller poorly on communication, both in the DSR's and in
text feedback. And if I don't get an invoice right away (within minutes), I will wait at least 24 hours
before making payment, because I want to give the seller time to send an invoice or acknowledgment
so I won't have to rate him/her poor on communication.

As a buyer, I like to receive from the seller an invoice, a personal acknowledgment of the win, a status
update when my payment arrives, another update when payment clears (if a check), and another update
when the item ships. If I get all those things, I respond by giving stellar feedback and by personally
replying to those status updates. Man, ebay was all like that back in 2000 when I started. Not so any
more. I expect a lot, but I'm very generous and forgiving with the feedback I give to sellers.

    Thanks,
    Mark

I HATE getting 4 e-mails from the seller plus at least one each from eBay and PayPal for a transaction.
When someone wins an item from me, all they get is an invoice (if they don't pay instantly), a PayPal
ship notification, and positive feedback unless there's some special circumstance. Less is more.

  • Knock on wood.....in 10 years on Ebay....never got stiffed on payment.....sorry to hear it Craig, looks like a nice coin and I am sure another buyer would be happty to pick it up. If I didn't have multiple nicely toned 1883-O's in 65 I would buy it from you myself. image

I had the same not too long ago. After a week I sent an email asking if she still wanted the item. No Response. I think day 9 I filed a NPB. She responds on a Monday saying she's mailing the check tomorrow (Tuesday). Wednesday she emails saying she didn't know if she mailed it or not and had I received it? I emailed back and said that I had no way of knowing if she mailed it or not, and thus I couldn't help her. Thursday she emailed and said she thought she mailed 2 payments, and could I send the other one back if I received it. She said it would arrive Friday. I emailed her Friday just letting her know nothing had arrived. She wrote back and said it would definately be here Saturday. Saturday I opened the office and sure enough nothing had arrived. She then emailed Monday and said she mailed it to the wrong seller and would mail the check Tuesday. Anyway this buyer has a 500+ 100% feedback, actively bids and buys all kinds of stuff, shows delayed feedback avg. 30 + days, and finally her payment arrived on a Friday, postmarked a few days earlier, in the wrong format, listing specified cashiers check or money orders only, I get 2 checks 1/2 money order, 1/2 personal check, with the personal check having a different address than the ship to address. A real pita and a BS'er..
